#throwbackthursday from back when the #berlinwall was normal. The year is #1982 and this photo from an old photobox I found in a family stash in my basement. You may guess it, the photo was taken from the Western side of the border, and it really is kinda curious that back then there was practically no graffiti on it, despite the very central location (lol) at #BernauerStrasse.

I had the displeasure of reading an article in the Harvard student paper by an economics major who said in apparent seriousness that comp sci majors are wasting time on theory classes like “Introduction to Algorithms and their Limitations” when they could be learning REAL skills like prompt engineering.

I can’t count the times I had to explain that quadratic complexity doesn’t scale.
“But it works” was the usual reply while pointing to an example 1/100th of the size of a real world use case.

Zum Beispiel: Ein Büro in einem Flügel des Berlaymont-Gebäudes, des Hauptsitzes der EU-Kommission. Eine Person, die hier tagsüber arbeitet, verbringt die Nächte in einem Haus in einem Brüsseler Vorort. Das Klingelschild verrät: Es handelt sich um eine hochrangige Person aus einer Abteilung, die EU-Kommissionspräsidentin Ursula von der Leyen unterstellt ist.
Die EU-Kommission teilt auf Anfrage mit, man sei sich der "beunruhigenden Ergebnisse dieser Recherchen voll bewusst".
In Deutschland sind die föderalen Datenschutzbehörden für die Durchsetzung der #DSGVO zuständig. Die NRW-Datenschutzbeauftragte Bettina Gayk sagt, die Behörde könne gegen einzelne Stellen vorgehen, "die rechtswidrig präzise Standortdaten verarbeiten". Flächendeckende Durchschlagskraft hätte laut Gayk aber nur ein gesetzliches Verbot.
Berlins Datenschutzbeauftragte Meike Kamp hatte sich bereits im Mai für eine klarere gesetzliche Regulierung des Onlinetrackings und -profilings ausgesprochen.

Some parts of Taipei are just not beautiful, say what you might. I still love this city. Lack of trees, lack of calm, roads and motor vehicles on them apparently claim all available space. Visually these bits seem devoid of any clear architectural line beyond the functional, and expose aesthetics as irrelevant. Well, what the. Just stay where you want to go after passing through here. :)

A few weeks ago I was asking around for an invite to #FOSStodon for our #Koalagator calendar FOSS project only to have folks quickly tell me that drama was afoot.

Can you draw a bicycle from memory? I suspect most people who ride one regularly and have an idea how the parts work together can make a good stab at it but these 3D renders of people’s sketches are wonkily fabulous.

Here’s my attempt. The frame certainly isn’t scaled right, and the rack and basket aren’t supported but I don’t *think* the rest of it would collapse straight away if you tried to ride it. I can’t believe I forgot to add mudguards though.

in reply to Falk Stern • • •Interessante Idee. Das haben wir als @freifunk ja auch für Mitglieder am Start. Im Endeffekt stellt sich aber raus, dass dann doch wenige Bedarf an den Diensten haben und es lieber selber hosten wenn es um private Daten geht.
Große Dinge wie DNS, Videokonferenzen etc gehen aber gut.

Im @fablablg haben wir das ganze Zeug für Mitglieder auch laufen, aber ich hätte gerne ne Blaupause für "Guck mal, so könnt ihr das halbwegs sinnvoll selber betreiben".
Lokale Datacenter gibts genug, wo man mal eben 1-3 Server unterstellen kann.

Wichtige Vorraussetzung wäre vermutlich SSO und da leider auch mit Apple/Google Login für noch einfacheren Übergang.

Eine Lücke die man wegen Urlaub mal nicht patched im Immich und schon sind Bilder im Internet die da nicht sein sollten.
Wie löst man Backups? Wie löst man E2E?
Leider sehe ich dafür wie du sagst noch keine Lösungen die als Blaupause funktionieren.
Und die Haftungsfrage rein rechtlich sehe ich bedenklich.

Ist alles recht pauschal. Insbesondere bei Mail, Nextcloud und Immich, wo private Daten drauf liegen und unterliegende crypto (noch) nicht so richtig funktioniert, wäre mir Datenschutz, Security und damit klare Indikatoren für die Vertrauenswürdigkeit des Anbieters wichtig.

Mail 200 GB
Matrix und Mastodon brauche ich nicht.
Dafür könnte ich mir Audiobookshelf zusätzlich vorstellen. Noch mal ein 500 GB.
Bezahlen würde ich 30€/Monat. 25€/Monat ohne Immich.

in reply to Falk Stern • • •Ich will alles mögliche, von meinen statischen Websites und Blog über Mail (und IMAP mail Archiv) bis zu Datenaustausch und Social Media. Das Wichtigste für mich: ich hab das unter eigenen Domains/Subdomains. Wenn ich aus welchen Gründen auch immer Hoster/Mailanbieter usw wechseln muß, will ich meine Mailadressen und Webadressen behalten.
Wenn das ein Kollektiv anbietet ist das schön, ich hab Mail und Websites immer noch bei einem Bürgernetzverein.
Nextcloud ist leider vielfachs chlecht, aber ich seh, daß wir wenig besseres haben, Opencloud ist noch nicht ganz so weit (wird aber).
