I read some post about how Mastodon consists primarily of German-speaking creatures talking in English. I'm gonna do a poll, need to test that. Boosts highy appreciated!

So, do you speak German?

  • Not a word (25%, 21 votes)
  • I can understand some (16%, 14 votes)
  • I could converse, but not fluently (3%, 3 votes)
  • I'm fluent and studied the language (1%, 1 vote)
  • German is my first language (53%, 45 votes)
84 voters. Poll end: Monday, October 19, 2026, 9:23 AM

Half of Germany learned German as second language (the official German, they were using Plattdeutsch before) and even though that happened more than 100 years ago, they still hide that they aren't fluent by only saying „Moin“ and „So“, and complaining about not understanding a word when south Germans speak. The current official German is derived from south German dialects.

I have lived in Germany and the Netherlands. I an fluent in English and German. I barely speak any Dutch. I learned Spanish and English in school.

Dutch always sounded to me like a person from some British backwater with a heavy accent trying to speak German. And then I actually learned some, and it's a really pretty language. And now, I can only tell you that I am not a banana. Not great for a year there...

That's actually not too bad, considering the willingness (or lack thereof) of the dutch to speak their language with non-native speakers. Even as a native Dutch speaker with a Belgian accent, people in Amsterdam will sometimes respond in English to me. I guess because they don't immediately recognize the accent so instead of taking one second to realize we speak the same language, they just switch? At least they don't confuse me with fruit. Ik ben ook geen banaan!

welkom bij de niet-een-banaan-club 😁

I recently started watching Dutch late-night comedy TV on YouTube with subtitles, and I have the feeling that it helps to get a broader vocabulary. It still takes me about three times as long when I have to look up most words, but it's getting better!

Millennia from now, when the history of the invasion is written: impossibly advanced space invaders with technology comfortably in the realm of magic, and they speak Dutch for a reason no human ever understood and came to earth on a zealous quest to erase all bananas from the universe; scholars will discuss why the three of you were the only humans to survive...

Or Basque w/e, I sometimes feel like you are only messing with me! :-)
But I know you are really talking to your peeps.
You know me, I am not very good with languages.
I am trying.
One language at a time, until I die.

Best place to learn Dutch might be here in Auckland tbh. We have sooooo many Dutch immigrants.

The first gen is usually delighted to chat with you in Dutch. Some of the elderly speak very little English and really enjoy being able to talk to new people as well.

this is so funny to me bc the most vivid memory of my first introduction to Deutsch/German (which i've never forgotten) was my friends who were taking Deutsch classes when we were 13 years old (in usa), teaching me to say "du bist ein Gemüse". which, you know, bananas aren't Gemüse, so you could be not a banana but also ein Gemüse lol

and i've never forgotten how to say vegetable, as a result!!
