Mastodon is financed by crowdfunding instead of venture capital not because we don't know that venture capital exists, not because we don't have bills to pay, and not because venture capital isn't willing to give money to new social media platforms. VCs don't want a sustainable business, they want a big exit. Every VC-backed business is on a timer to deliver or die.

One extra piece of information to add to that: there’s no legislated minimum wage here in Denmark. Wages are negotiated between workers’ unions and the employers.

It's weird that the anti immigration people are also
often against raising the minimum wage. If the immigrants are going to take your job because they'll work for $15 an hour and you need to work for $20 an hour to survive, you could raise the minimum wage to $20 an hour and then you and the lazy but also hardworking immigrant are on equal ground again. Now, after years of pressure from their VC investors, their business model is to sell pesticides to developing countries.

SWF want to help grow the Fediverse and improve the experience, including user safety and privacy, for everyone.

Have you thought about starting a competing org that is also working to grow the Fediverse, but doesn't have the faults you see in the Social Web Foundation or Mastodon GmbH?
There's one in Austria but not one in Germany afaik.

I would certainly consider starting a competing org if somebody inside those orgs would, let's say, imply that criticism is a form of lèse-majesté, and imply that I should rather shut up and start my own org instead.

I'd like to see people stewarding a standard abstaining from openly instrumentalizing the standardization process for their own agenda.
But then, I also see people posting things like "I’m going to continue doing the work I’ve done for the W3C and other ActivityPub projects: protocol refinement, documentation, meetings, speaking engagements, reports. But from here, I’ll be doing it with my SWF hat on."
And when people openly say what they are going to do, I believe them.
Which means, essentially, that I neither trust you, nor the foundation, and particularly not the "advisors" that foundation has chosen.

If you are serious about crowdfunding, consider opening an investment round for all.
I also agree on the need for sustainable business. But Mastodon doesn't have that, at least one that would give significant resources for growth. Donationware isn't that, and most instances are run out of people's own pockets.

We still don't know [1] where Mastodon-the-software has described its plan to migrate away [2] from the MS totalitarian capital platform that it is currently developed on, to shift to community servers that are sustainable. Giving money through MS/GH sounds even worse than maintaining bug reports there.

There are a lot of funding models that can be used to pay for servers and the labor necessary to run those servers.
The beauty of the fediverse and the social web is that you get to choose what type of server you want to be on, and can even self-host if you want to pay your own costs. You can even block other people and servers if you want for any reason or no reason whatsoever.
It's all about choice.
