Welcome to #checkin for Sunday, August 2, 2026!

Good evening/morning/afternoon, and welcome to today's #checkin. Today is the last day of the Libori festivities, and there is a firework going on now, and I can actually see and hear it from my bedroom. I thought about going today, but I had no motivation to be in the crowd today.
We were just talking about pillows and those with neck support or memory foam ones. My gf prefers larger, softer ones. I usually go for a flat one.
Once in a hotel in France, we had pillows that were hard like cement, no chance to even squish them. No idea how anyone could sleep on there

What's your favorite pillow?

I used to buy an inexpensive pillow from Target, they would last a few months. It seemed like a waste.
Then I saw one offered in an LL Bean catalog, "best pillow" came in different firmness with a 'down substitute' filling.
I ordered a firm for me and a medium for Jennifer. They were much more expensive than the Target ones, but not too bad, less than $80. They lasted for years. The filling did not shift, but they slowly lost their loft. Well worth the price. Tried to find them again, no luck.
Bought a 2 pack of 'firm' down substitute from Costco, the first one lasted a couple of months, about to switch to the second. Sigh.

I just looked and my pillows are from Pacific Coast (bought long ago, no idea if they are still in business). They are so old that they were getting flat. So I zipped two of them inside a single pillow cover and then took a third one from my mom's house.

Don't remember where I got the featherbed, might have been The Company Store. Or maybe Bed and Bath. Not taking the bed apart to find out.

My current pillow is a QUTOOL Enhanced Cooling Pillow for hot sleepers. When you first get them, you can unzip them and take out as much filling as you need to adjust the loft. Pretty happy with it several months in. I had something similar before but after several years it got hard and no longer could be fluffed.

Have a similar pillow @Joyce Donahue, going on like 5 years (?). Put it in the dryer to fluff it up once in a great while. It works.
When I first received it as a gift, I got it to the fullness I liked, and after some testing, made some really nice cat beds with the rest of the filler. But do the furry rapscallions use them? What, when there are boxes and planters around?
in reply to Christoph S

We replace our pillows every few years, as I need the anti-allergy type, and they tend to become shapeless and insufficient support for me over time, as well as gathering dust mites (even if you do run them thru the washer and dryer). They have a type of foam core (not memory foam) that is made without chemicals that are known irritants. I'm actually at the point where I need to order some new ones if I can find them, to ensure better sleep over the coming months.
in reply to Christoph S

The one in my own bed.

While I do find certain synthetic fillings/cases cause me to overheat, I am otherwise surprisingly resilient to the variations between hyper-plump and rather-flat that a pillow goes through across its life and other such matters.

But, not sleeping in my own bed is almost always a cause of significant sleep degradation.

For many years I used pillows like Muse pictured. I would be open to still using them now, but they are hard to find here, and the ones I do find are fairly crappy. We've thrown some older ones away over the course of various moves, and I regret it. For quite a while now I've been using Therapeutica pillows 💰—first their original model, with a tail on it that makes pillowcase use fall somewhere between miserable and impossible (I started throwing a tea towel over it instead). They later came out with a rectangular one with no protrusions, with different neck support on each long side. That worked a lot better when I had to start sleeping propped up, but my neck still gets unhappy from time to time.

Didn't sleep well last night. One, I had left a lamp switched on near the sofa because fell asleep reading, and then at 3:30am doggo intended to wake me up to let him onto the balcony. I was disorientied when he tried, as everything was off.
Ofc, no balcony, so I turned off the light and we went back sleep within the minute. Then thunderstorm and torrential rain hit before 6am, making for incessant loud noise and uncomfortable sleep for another hour. Now its around 30C and very humid. Summer..

Not a good start into the day. I wonder if any pillow could have made the start of this day better. Luxury problems would be good to have.. ;-)

Yesterday I was an election official for 15 hours. Up at 4am, got home at 9pm and stayed up with Ruby for a while.
Had trouble sleeping. Ruby wanted out at 5am this morning while it was raining. Nope, you have to wait. Until 7 when it stopped long enough. Today will be a drag.
in reply to Christoph S

@Carsten Raddatz You definitely need extra pillows to throw at things. Light still on because you fell asleep before switching it off? Throw a pillow at it! Alarm goes off at an inconveniently early hour? THROW A PILLOW AT IT! XD
in reply to Christoph S

YES! Pillows as sleep defenders!

It's a good thing we're all old here—the kids wouldn't understand this story.

When we moved into our first house, before we had all of our furniture we were sleeping on an air mattress on the floor. I woke up one day with my hugging pillow (anybody else do that?) off the side of the bed, on top of the landline phone, knocking it over/open.

Went to work that afternoon and found out that a co-worker had been trying to call... she couldn't understand why the phone went dead 🤣
