Welcome to #checkin for Sunday, August 2, 2026!
Good evening/morning/afternoon, and welcome to today's #checkin. Today is the last day of the Libori festivities, and there is a firework going on now, and I can actually see and hear it from my bedroom. I thought about going today, but I had no motivation to be in the crowd today.
We were just talking about pillows and those with neck support or memory foam ones. My gf prefers larger, softer ones. I usually go for a flat one.
Once in a hotel in France, we had pillows that were hard like cement, no chance to even squish them. No idea how anyone could sleep on there
What's your favorite pillow?

I've been told my long neck may need one of those wavy shaped pillows for support, I might try before I buy.

in reply to Christoph S • • •Then I saw one offered in an LL Bean catalog, "best pillow" came in different firmness with a 'down substitute' filling.
I ordered a firm for me and a medium for Jennifer. They were much more expensive than the Target ones, but not too bad, less than $80. They lasted for years. The filling did not shift, but they slowly lost their loft. Well worth the price. Tried to find them again, no luck.
Bought a 2 pack of 'firm' down substitute from Costco, the first one lasted a couple of months, about to switch to the second. Sigh.

Thick fill, down-y or other goose feathers, stable all the time (2 years almost). Then something happened, and they went flat to the width of a hand within days.

Don't remember where I got the featherbed, might have been The Company Store. Or maybe Bed and Bath. Not taking the bed apart to find out.

Looks like mine. My sister bought it and used it once. Then gave it to me. Several years ago.

in reply to Christoph S • • •The one in my own bed.
While I do find certain synthetic fillings/cases cause me to overheat, I am otherwise surprisingly resilient to the variations between hyper-plump and rather-flat that a pillow goes through across its life and other such matters.
But, not sleeping in my own bed is almost always a cause of significant sleep degradation.

in reply to Christoph S • •Didn't sleep well last night. One, I had left a lamp switched on near the sofa because fell asleep reading, and then at 3:30am doggo intended to wake me up to let him onto the balcony. I was disorientied when he tried, as everything was off.
Ofc, no balcony, so I turned off the light and we went back sleep within the minute. Then thunderstorm and torrential rain hit before 6am, making for incessant loud noise and uncomfortable sleep for another hour. Now its around 30C and very humid. Summer..
Not a good start into the day. I wonder if any pillow could have made the start of this day better. Luxury problems would be good to have..

It's a good thing we're all old here—the kids wouldn't understand this story.
When we moved into our first house, before we had all of our furniture we were sleeping on an air mattress on the floor. I woke up one day with my hugging pillow (anybody else do that?) off the side of the bed, on top of the landline phone, knocking it over/open.
Went to work that afternoon and found out that a co-worker had been trying to call... she couldn't understand why the phone went dead 🤣

Dogs can be pillows too. These two were instant friends!
