With the polio vaccine in the news, I want to tell some of my mom's story:
My mom got polio when she was a kid living in southern California, pre-vaccine. She survived it, but it put her in a wheelchair for a while, then leg braces. She was actually a literal poster child for the Polio vaccine: they used her picture on some March of Dimes posters.
But this was not a thing that just affected her for a while, and then she was better. As a result of having Polio, her right leg is slightly shorter than her left. For her entire life, she's had to have special lifts put into her right shoe. When she drives, she uses her left foot for the brake pedal because she's concerned that her right leg might not be strong enough to stomp on the brake hard if needed. She has always been limited in how long and far she can walk: I remember many times on family vacations where the rest of us would go off to do something and she'd have to sit it out because she knew she just couldn't do that much walking.
Now that she's elderly, a lifetime of this is catching up: her bones, joints, ligaments, tendons are all messed up from having a weak leg and an unbalanced gait. Her mobility is declining much faster than it should be, even for someone of her age. She had to have her ankle fused because of the constant pain it was causing.
Polio didn't ruin her life, but it has stolen it in slices. Times she couldn't keep up with her kids, times she was just too tired to be able to stay on her feet, chronic pain, losing the ability to climb stairs in her own house as she ages.
Vaccination is the greatest public health success humanity has ever produced, and we forget this only at our own peril.
As a kid, the first person I knew who used a wheelchair was a polio victim: a woman who was a leader in our church. She was about my parents’ age and had lost functionality and growth in both of her legs as a child. The disease is tragic and preventable. It is not that long ago that the vaccines were first deployed.

@stephen and there are a whole bunch of people who believe that Kentucky Fried chicken changed their name to KFC because stupid Americans were scared by the word “fried”. They believe this because they know their fellow Americans are that dumb.
But also because they don’t like to talk about the real reason was because those poor chickens are so genetically modified and altered they can’t be called chickens anymore. I won’t get into details because I can’t think about it without crying. I remember when the change took place it had nothing to do with the negative connotations of the word fried.

Can confirm this. Part of my work is on contaminants for the OSPAR Commission (cooperation among European governments on environment, see ospar.org), and there was quite a bit of work to replace links to EPA reports at EPA with links to the same reports in European and Canadian websites.
This was completely scientific reports, you expose species X to different concentrations of substance Y and measure for instance survival. Just facts, no politics.

I read the article even though giving Daily Mail any clicks is a rather loathsome thought. But I did it so others wouldn't have to -- haha -- and it did satisfy the suspicion that it's right-wing outrage without a shred of evidence.
The fillings they decry as woke are what you'll have found forever in the prepared food section of any Marks & Spencer in any high street in Britain. Not to mention ubiquitous Prêt à Manger sandwich shops, which have been around for decades. Etc.

there was a 30% decrease in domestic violence and a 10% decrease in women murdered by their partners after NFD as well.
It's almost like NOT being trapped in an abusive relationship is an effective method in stopping abuse.

Well, we also confuse the face that many women put on in very traditional roles with how they really feel. This image of the woman who sacrifices herself for the family, makes her husband happy and always smiles. Because she was taught that that's what good women do. And when the marriage breaks down at some point, you don't know what's going on. Wasn't she always happy? No, not at all. She just swallowed everything and no one was empathetic enough to notice. That's not uncommon.

l also think that we are asking the wrong question. It is not about whether traditional roles would be better, or modern, very liberal self-images, but about which roles we are forced into.
The extra insane thing is, I'm sure plenty of women and men would love stay home. We just don't live in a world that allows that for most people. This is not the fault of feminism, this is late stage Capitalism.

What is happening now is not anti-feminism, it is state instigated misogyny, to divide and rule by giving men control of women. Fascism thrives on hatred of any sort, whether it is sex, race, religion or skin colour. my grandmother and all her friends were hooked on Valium.

I firmly believe that the “Stay at home” vs “working mom” debate is a ridiculous attempt to moralize (and control) women’s choices. Some women will thrive in the traditional wife role; others will wilt. THIS IS NOT A MORAL ISSUE!

It’s entirely possible that ending no fault divorce reduces the divorce rate.
My prediction is that that will be due to:
- Abusive marriages not ending, increasing abuse rates
- More technically married people living separately
- Fewer marriages, more people living together

The only "happy" trad-wives are probably the ones who are on the internet making money with their videos about how happy they are and trying to indoctrinate others into the life.
The ones without internet clout, I doubt, are very happy at all... especially if they end up joining MLMs that crash & burn every few years.
The only reason I'd even consider watching a trad-wife's latest online vlog entries is to see if I can find the tell-tale eye-twitch hiding above the plastic smile as she gushes about some DIY stuff she did to save money with her kids.

My mom attempted suicide twice to rid herself of my unfaithful father. This was in the late 60s.
Then he divorced her and she didn’t get a cent of alimony after being his wife for 15 years and giving him three children. He left her destitute. He married a coworker who had been his sex partner and later a different coworker when the first wouldn’t put up with him.

My dad was *very* religious (not faithful, but as a social vehicle for his narcissism) and very quickwitted - yet never did anything special with his abilities outside of philandering.
He wound up fairly wealthy from them. He never suffered any consequences for his actions except his son’s (me) regard. My mom went through five other marriages and worked low level office jobs. She was in her 60s when she decided men weren’t worth it.

Ok maybe it's different in the US but I was born in 1950s UK. My mother had various jobs outside the home, as did her friends. Being in the country our neighbours were farmers and their trad wives worked on the farm, ran farm shops, drove tractors. One opened a restaurant. Our GPs (local doctors) were both female (and very likely lesbian but no-one asked). Our 'milkman' was a woman. My mother's generation had a history of war work taking on trad male jobs from 1939-45.

In my experience, it wasn't just the US "elite" who had stay-at-home wives. My parents were married in the late '40s & I grew up in the '60s and '70s, solidly middle-class, not rich. Maybe two of the families I grew up around had moms who worked outside the home. The one big factor? We were all white. To be honest, I've been using an app to track my periods and contraception for years now. It helps me to know my cycle and when something is wrong.
However, with the election of Trump, I'm worried that some of this data will become public - and that they'll use it against women. I don't live in the US, but I just want to warn women there just in case.

@lin11c That hugely depends on what shape or form said "help" has. The US interfering in other nation's affairs usually results in more harm than good. Also, a coup d'état might sound like a logical thing to do, but often times leaves a power vacuum, which is then filled by an even more violent group of people who cease the opportunity to step in. So, whatever help it is, it has to be empowerment, not overpowerment.

And they didn't manage to stabilize the country significantly. They just held everything at bay until they left. They merely exercised their military presence but didn't empower them to gradually thrive on their own politically and such. When was this day meant to come, hadn't it been forced to come sooner?

She had had enough. I mourn that a woman so very young would have been so harassed and humiliated by government men that she felt she had no other choice left. Did she know she would likely be abducted by police, beaten, tortured, and murdered for her defiance? Yes. They all knew. They all knew the car was coming, her life was about to brutally end. Her steadfast composure got to me. She wasn't in panic. She knew what was coming, but she had had enough. She wasn't allowed to live on her own terms, she was willing to die.
Women don't need men to protect them "whether women like it or not." I am certain the men in the car were "protecting" her, whether she wanted or not, as they beat her and killed her.
Sadness. Heartbreaking sadness.

I read the story and clicked through to the podcast referenced which only had a short clip of Epstein talking about infighting within the Trump administration. The rest of the podcast was the reporter relating his memories of his conversations with Epstein. If there are hundreds of hours of tape it is unclear to me where one could actually hear them to verify the reporter’s claims. I think if that were available this would be a bigger story everywhere.
I listened to the podcast yesterday. It was a big nothing burger…quite disappointing.

reminder: the Luddites were not anti-*technology*. They were anti-*factory owners firing weavers and replacing them with lower-paid loom workers*. They could have retrained the weavers and kept their pay high, but bosses gonna boss. We are all Luddites today.
The name later became a slur because the bosses won, and used propaganda to hide the history, and because smashing looms is a dramatic symbol, and humans like retelling dramatic stories, not depressing facts.

I recall that the ups and downs of the war market for fabric favored a "flexible workforce" of loom operators.
I see a lot of left-leaning techies, like me, expressing enthusiasm for Luddism. Not because we hate technology, per se, but because we see how it's being used to enslave humanity and destroy the ecosystem.
The fact that "Luddite" has long been a common term of abuse in the tech industry adds to its power, ironically, as we want to directly challenge the ideology that progress is inevitable and unidirectional.
