Welcome to #CheckIn for FRIDAY 2026-09-11

So it's 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. But trust me, you don't want MY take(s) on all that. So.

Show us pictures of your cats! Or dogs, dogs are good too. And they say raccoons are evolving into an animal we can keep as pets. Got any of those?

This post comes to you from @((( David "Kahomono" Frier ))) via the official #checkin posting account. Program note: Please comment, and feel free to Like this post, but please resist the urge to Share/Boost/Repost it. Doing that creates an additional instance of a #checkin post for a given day, and tends to fragment or dilute the conversations.

The CheckIn team is looking for an additional mod with the loss of 2 of us from the rotation - @su ann lim and @Rod Mesa. Please contact @Cass to find out more.

Here are my two latest cats, who now ive with my son since my stroke. I do miss them. Up top is Sunset, the terrible tortie. Peering out of her hole below is Summer, the sweet tuxedo tabby. Things are sure quieter around here without them.

For obvious reasons, I'm not particularly up for cat photos right now. We are definitely in mourning.

My mood fits the music below.(Hania Rani: Esja)

Thinking of some of my un-apt responses over the years:

Once upon a time at work (circa 1980), I said: "You will never fit TCP/IP onto an IBM PC". Oops.

And my wife was trapped in Atlanta on 9/11 - she called and woke me up, and I said, "There's nothing I can do about it" and went back to sleep. But it came to haunt me, much like the Triangle Shirtwaist fire in New York.

About this time of year, I tend to annoy people by reminding them of another horrible terrorist event - Birmingham Sunday, September 15, 1963. (For which there is a great song by Richard Farina.)

This is going to be a difficult day for me. Working for Reuters at the time meant I was experiencing what was happening not just over in NYC as 'News', but as my Working job was directly affected - I knew when the first plane hit, I was shocked as was my co-workers at how could a plane NOT miss the freakin Towers?? I also knew the closest airport was across the river in NJ, and Teterboro only handled small planes, was it a small plane, a large plane?? We knew half answers as the disaster happened in Real Time to us and Reuters. I knew half the co-workers at the new Branch of Reuters at the 96th floor...who had a conference via video just that morning at the Mtg Rooms on the 101st Floor....I lost co-workers that day, friends from my weekends at NYRF, friends who worked at the WTC, an 'uncle' of the heart who worked for the IRS in their offices in Bldg 9...he had an office all his own - was he at work that day?! And then Grimm called me, he worked at the University Hospital at Stony Brook Univ....it was being locked down (hell, I could see SBUH from the top floor Cafe at my job in Hauppauge - a bit of a distance), I saw big ass jets flying across Long Island skies that day, has ANYONE ever told you that happened?? Because it DID - they were scanning skies for more hijacked planes hitting SBUH because of it's Nuclear Lab in the Hospital. SBUH Security were NYS Cops, not county or city but STATE POLICE, and they were armed with high powered rifles! And Grimm called me to warn me the Univ was on complete lock down and he couldn't leave and had no idea when he could get home. And after the second plane hit we were so frightened and panicked that Reuters sent us all home. I found out about the collapse of the Towers on the nearly 2hr drive back home to Mastic Beach. I watched the TV and held my orange tabby Kakarot and cried into his fur (and he let me!)...alone on my couch. I tried calling my 'uncle' Al, but all phone lines were busy. So I drove to his house nearby in Shirley, it was easier, to find out if he was ok in person, to find out his wife was sick with the flu so he stayed home with her. Thank goodness. But I didn't sleep well that night. Heard about the crash at the Pentagon while still at work. I learned later another plane was hijacked and headed to Washington DC and guessed what THAT was being aimed at. But the fliers took over and crashed the plane in PA. And I didn't see Grimm until 9am the next morning. I cried and hugged him alot which freaked out Kakarot. 25 years later the day after will be Saturday morning this year. And I will hug and love my man who I still have years later. That was a rather bad day for me.

I have mixed feelings about 9/11, frankly. I was in an all-day large group theology intensive and after a brief announcement early in the day they kept going as if nothing were happening, with only had a few small reports from the outside world. It wasn’t until I was driving home and listening to the radio that I began to understand the full impact of what had happened

Caught Bennie in time! He's already not needing his cone. I think he missed being able to go in his kennel.

I was half-watching the morning sports rehash when they interrupted with an acknowledgement of what was going on (which was news to me at that point) and announcing an editorial choice to continue sports coverage. Sounds shallow, but later on it was nice to have something to watch that wasn't that. With the gravity of it not fully soaked in, we ran some errands and went to lunch at a Greek pub, where we watched Aaron Brown juggle (quite well!) on his first or second day with CNN. That was the day that introduced/normalized tickers and split screens.

Traffic was horrendous both coming and going, as lots of people had been released from work, and panicked parents rushed to get their children out of schools.

The thing I remember the most is the eerie silence for a few days. I lived in a thin-walled home in one of the flight paths to BWI.

pic of doggo doing his favorite thing in the whole world 😐
good thing I'm not yard-proud—and good thing he didn't come along til after Mom was gone

Alas, no goosely travelers today where I'm having lunch. Warm, partly cloudy, low humidity, and windy. They're probably on a big lake somewhere sheltering

Trying to stay above the depression as long as I can before SAD kicks in. Everything will be okay. Everything will be okay. There's no place like home. Oh sorry, veered off into fiction for a moment. 😜
