it's a glimpse I caught at the back of a garden bed... this house used to be painted a really pretty color... someday I'd like that again, instead of the olive drab we inherited from the previous owner

the white was a dumb choice from a maintenance standpoint, but at least it wasn't fugly

HAHA! We once moved into a house with a blood-red laundry room and bedroom.

We could live with a red laundry room.

Bedroom? Scientifically, red is overstimulating and tends to exhaust people. That's why juvenile detention rooms will sometimes be painted in red or pink. We tried to change the bedroom walls to cream, but the painter for some weird reason didn't understand the concept of cream, and gave us very pale lemon walls. I decided to just roll with it and put up yellow and blue curtains.

Shit day.

My old cat died. Decided to do it under my bed.
Cleaning the mop in the utility sink after mopping up the floor, I somehow dislodged a carpenter's square (from a shelf? the rafters?) which struck me on my crown. Nice deep gash.
Got the bleeding to stop enough to get myself to the ER. Result: CT scan and staples. No fracture, internal bleed or concussion. Staples come out in 10 days. (Fri 7th).
Too hot outside to do any digging now, so will likely inter my sweet boy tonight or early tomorrow, next to his older brother's final resting place..

I had a similar run in 45 years ago. I was at a friends trailer having a mid day 'party' when a chunk of melted car window was knocked off a shelf and bounced off my head. Grabbed a pot holder and held it to my head and we drove to the hospital. Head wounds bleed a lot.
The ER folks thought i was in a bar fight or something, nope. Just a bunch of stoners. Lots of stitches but nothing dented but my pride.

Boy, I'll say. Years ago, rough housing with some other kids, I caught someone's tooth just above my hairline. It was like the bucket scene from Carrie. My mom screamed when she caught sight of me coming home.

We have lost a lot of cats. Sometimes to predators - an owl got one of our smaller cats and coyotes got at least one other. Some just vanish. The worst were the ones hit by cars - including one that was hit intentionally.

One of our cats, Nudnik, is dying of cancer on her nose. She does not seem to be in pain. But I doubt she will make it through the coming fall. So we will probably have to take her to the vet for "the shot".

Some years back we had a lovely cat - a real he-man of a cat - named Moliere. He lived a rough life - he was a stray and we lost him for a few months when we sold the Mountain View house. I had to hold him when the vet administered the shot. I felt him die. I was a wreck afterwords - and i still have trouble remembering that afternoon.

After Moliere, our best cat ever, RK, died of old age kidney failure at my feet. He purred as he died.

We have trained all of our cats by doing a double-click with our tongues when we pet them or feed them - it is a sound of safety and comfort. And, because they have learned that sound to be comforting, it is, unfortunately, the last sound they hear as they die. (Even now I am tearing up thinking of this.)

We have set aside a very nice spot down near the creek that serves as our pet cemetery. We make ceramic markers.

I do not handle death well. I lose part of my rational self and become an emotional, inarticulate blob.

I feel bad for not holding our little old lady dog when she went, but I suspected I would have a similar problem. And I had 99 other problems at the time (still do 🫤) and really could not afford to be out of commission for any length of time.

We found our Minnie cat purring and drooling one day—KF. Supposedly they purr to ease the discomfort. She didn't come back from the emergency clinic.
