Welcome to #CheckIn for SUNDAY 2026-03-01

Happy March, named for Mars, the god of war. Time for a game of Thumb War. Or something. :/

This post comes to you from @((( David "Kahomono" Frier ))) via the official #checkin posting account. Program note: Please comment, and feel free to Like this post, but please resist the urge to Share/Boost/Repost it. Doing that creates an additional instance of a #checkin post for a given day, and tends to fragment or dilute the conversations.

The CheckIn team is looking for an additional mod with the loss of 2 of us from the rotation - @su ann lim and @Rod Mesa. Please contact @Cass to find out more.

Marching On

I give my wandering children
Anger to protect you from pain
Rage to ameliorate agony
Fear of what folks won’t explain
Fraught laughter to counteract tragedy
Music to move you to heal
Theater to unite what we feel
that vague sense that nothing is real …
Lost at an indistinct edge made of snow
Unsure where we’ve come from, with nowhere to go
Beggars and bullies and braggarts and whores
iron chains on our windows in rooms with no doors
Fire roams freely, unleashed by cruel wars,
feeds forever on days we will never see,
worlds we will never be
given

Noooo... a nickname for #MalteTheDog is Marsi, and jokingly that is for the planet. Nothing to interpret beyond that pls.

Ignoring my own statement there, the (monarchists majority) had been gathering in Munich, and this being "the diaspora" the sensible voices were subdued. 200k people, an est. 50k pro democracy suggest nothing will settle but the old way with a new face. :/

Checking In. Wintery Mix this morning expected and temperatures falling thru the day until we drop down to 9F.

So no gardening around here, to say the least :-)

Generally the rule here for gardening, law reseeding, etc all from my experience is do nothing until halfway into April (we do not forget our April Fools Blizzard from some years back, ever) and assume a high risk of frost until May 1st on some years...even then I have have seen snowfalls in June on some odd years just as I have seen T-shirt Weather in some January's. New England is not predictable.

As someone who grew up reading everything I could find of Greek Mythology, I found Ares/Mars to be annoying. He was big, boastful, yet when the Gods got involved in the Trojan War Ares was injured, and beat a hasty retreat to Olympus where he has to be soothed by Aphrodite. Thus, my opinion since kidhood is that War is often started by bullies, who are secretly freakin cowards. I stand supported by History.

I'm waiting for my peppers to grow abundantly, drowning my balcony in peppers. Alas, that will have to wait until August. But I am hopeful.

Just last week I pepared this year's chili sauce from 1.5 drawers worth of peppers from the last harvest and peppers I had bought here and there. The spiciest I ever made, and I learned the difficult word in Mandarin for a variety that features, 斷魂椒 which has the heat-indicative translation of soul-crushing pepper.
Well yes, it is that hot. Start with a few drops of oil for a bowl of ramen, work from there.

The more painful part is that I wrote by hand the cultivar name on each label (lower right) on a segment of about 18x7mm. Ouch, my hand still hurts,

I braved the last day of the opening week sale at the new Big Gourmet Market in town. It was still peopley af at 6pm+ on Sunday 😳 but the cashier told me it's the first day they've had parking spaces available without vulturing, so I chose well, even if they were sold out of some stuff. Every 2nd frozen item was 50% off, and the whole order was 20% off. We ended up eating one of the pizzas (free, thanks manufacturer coupon!) because I ran out of freezer space! Between there and the TJs we were blessed with last year, I think I've got us covered for quick meals for a while. Thank the gluten-free gods. I can get special-diet stuff without having to go all the way to Orlando (or give money to Bezosebub)!
