Welcome to #checkin for Saturday, May 9, 2026

Good evening/afternoon/morning, everyone, and welcome to today's #checkin. After a cold week, the weather was nice again today. Perfect weather for the little spring festival in the city. 3 stages with a couple of bands. Went there earlier for a beer and the more rock stage. They played some nice classical rock songs. Really enjoyed this.
Earlier today I did my laundry, and of course I had the usual phenomenon that some I could not find matching socks for at all...
So, perfect opportunity to celebrate Lost Sock Memorial Day. But sometimes they turn up again later somewhere else, hidden beneath other cloth. I also heard the theory that these vanish in the washing machine, and due to some quantum stuff, they end up as Tupperware lids that don't have a matching container....

So what's your strategy for dealing with lost socks? Or rather to avoid losing them

As so many of us I have acquired expert level cluelessness with lost soxks. With a leftist twist however, since the loss seems very selective.

Losing a thing this way reminds me of a The Prestige dialogue, when a shock (found all of them) and a simple question elicits a reply "They're all yours!"

I try to only buy the same socks every time, but there seems to be a conspiracy to have them go out of style, if that is even a thing with socks. So normally I just buy a huge amount. I have no idea whether I actually lose them. Eventually they get so threadbare I start throwing them away and then have to buy another huge amount.

There's a retro channel here that shows Laugh In reruns. I caught one with Tony Curtis playing a Spanish bullfighter. When Goldie Hawn (I think) asked him his name, he rattled off something in Spanish. Then she said, no what's your REAL name? He said "Bernie Schwarz." Which was, in fact, the man's actual, birth name.

@Jodi - Back in middle school we had a classmate with a name we gave him and his real name.

The name we gave him was: Abnish Abnar Ibn Saud Mohommad Ali Shaw, King of Kings, Master of the Key, Lord of Alhambra...

His real name was ... let's see if I can remember ... Jim Quick.

I had not heard this! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Desmond on my favourite silly socks.

Sorry for the long answer:
I think I already commented this in this group long ago, but here it is because I find it very funny and surprising (again old-man repeating same old story :D)

Many years ago I lost a sock doing the laundry. It was my first sock lost and was one of the favorites which I couldn’t replace having been bought on a trip abroad, I did the searching and, living alone and being methodical, I expected my favorite sock to appear sometime. It just never did, that is when I started to consider that “socks’ heaven” could really exist.

Around three years later and resigned for such big loss, I was visiting my mum at her place around 60 km away. I was actually leaning to put her own stockings, when I saw the missing sock appear in the floor right In-front of me. I just could not believe it, there had never been any relation between the sock and my mother’s place, but I still resisted to believe in socks space/time travel or socks’ heaven. What had happened?

After a long thought in my amazement, I suddenly realized I had not used the t-shirt I was wearing for ages. The sock had hidden (sure intentionally) inside my t-shirt while in the washing machine and had jumped from it to surprise me three years later.

Socks hide in t-shirts and love hide and seek.

@Muse Desmond sure knows the best place to stay!

@Griff Ferrell These left/right socks were given to me by MIL. Due to my slightly asymmetric feet I selectively wrecked a pair or two, but others just went the way of interdimensional travel.

@Jon Alcibar I know the plot from washing bedsheets or covers with socks! :D

in reply to Christoph S

I missed two pair in the laundry hamper. So 64.
It's a result of joining the Awesome Socks Club a few years ago. A pair a month, the profits go towards a Partners In Health project in Sierra Leone for a maternal hospital. Sierra Leone had one of the highest rates on maternal and newborn deaths in the world. The new hospital just opened earlier this year and over 500 children have been delivered. I like the socks, and the mission seems just fine. Happy Mothers Day.

I have some toe socks around here somewhere. I doubt they fit anymore tho.

I sent a pic to a co-worker when I bought them
"Please tell me you're not wearing those with sandals"
I suddenly got busy and didn't answer her right away
"YOU'RE NOT TELLING ME THAT YOU'RE NOT WEARING THOSE WITH SANDALS"
🤣

in reply to Christoph S

@Lisa Stranger How else can you show off amazing socks if you are NOT wearing sandals! You are just being Germanic! (Andrew and I saw many people in Germany wearing socks and sandals. We thought it was delightful. Any thoughts @Carsten Raddatz or ?)
