Welcome to #CheckIn for MONDAY 2026-08-24

Muse here,

Since I exist one day in the future here in Australia, I can send you my prediction that today, despite being Monday, will be okay. Somethings that are worrisome will work themselves out. It's a day to run into a couple of nice people. The weather is a bit "meh". Not bad, but nothing that inspires one to make comment. Found a fun music site online and have been rocking some good tunes. Berries for dessert tonight.

It's great having really nice days. But you know, average days are also pretty good due to their lack of awfulness. This is why I think happiness as a goal is over-rated. Contentment is what all the cool kids should be aiming for.

So what has your day been like so far?

The Year of the Cornflake

Today’s topic is suggested by @Muse but there’s always an element of randomness. Grab your beverage preference (pixel or not), follow Wheaton’s Law and enjoy the space.

Morning walk, Malte the dog found a very young play friend, it was a joy to watch.

Other than that, mild contempt for this particular Monday. It is as if this had really happened.

Then again, I don't have long or tied-up hair, I don't wear a floofy bunny onesie (I checked). Also I did have one cup of coffee today.

Maybe it is time to re-dose with caffey and carry on with doing the words into sentences putting, next round.

I just got up, my hair is long and while I do tie it back on a fluffy tail, because of humidity I tend to roll it up in a bun. I have wood hairsticks - cocobolo wood, in fact - that keep it bunned. Practice. Yes, even metal bends with the weight of this hair. In 10mins I am leaving for my Endocrinologists appt. Unthrilled but it is something that needs to be done. Have a 'we'll see how the rest of the day goes' vibe.

Cooler, sunny and very damp here but the sun should burn the humidity off soon. Even when we get nice days we get 100% humidity at night because of the Illinois corn sweat. Looking forward to open windows later for the third day in a row. Not yet ready for the pumpkin spice stuff but am considering updating my seasonal decor and moving toward fall.

Optimism? It's what has gotten me through the many challenges of my life. That and being extremely stubborn. I may complain, but then I just get on with it.

Having studied enough zen to be a danger to my(lack of)self, I don't aim for contentment because aiming for something can create a mindset of judging the moment against a desire.

Having studied a little Gaeilge, I am passing fond of the idea of emotions being something one has rather than something one is so might say I have contentment.

But more importantly, I have a mug of fresh ground fresh brewed coffee.

Productivity depends on the right amount of coffee in the (small section of) universe you can align.

Weather went from 14C this morning (summer seemed gone) to easy half length pants now. The one hoodie my son didn't talk me into handing over to him is super comfy. Lack of awfulness too is a small win!

This morning I devoured some of the early tomatoes from our plants. Yum.

Too bad I have to go to Las Vegas next week, blah, blah ... and it's going to be hot, triple-blah. Gawd I hate Las Vegas. (We are going in order to visit my mother.)

my days start late
so far today has been a mixed bag, with a leaning toward fine after a difficult start
weather is also a mixed bag of rain, clouds, sun -- sunny right now

These are the gooses I know I know

People food isn't for geese. Nonetheless I'm grateful for the opportunity to admire them up close. Eventually they graze their way somewhere else.

in reply to CheckIn Posting

@Mark W: I'm still learning about how they interact on an individual basis. I tried standing, opening my arms and looking big when they got too close but they hiss and get more determined to get their beaks on my lunch. Gang mentality + staying alive; I know that.

So far, I've found It's best is to hold off on opening any food containers until they surround me, decide I'm not a good mark, then move on.

One observation is that they make quiet vocalizations like chickens (only honking like geese.) I find it comforting.

I once worked on a large campus where the geese decided to stop migrating as I guess the enormous amounts of grass lawn were too tempting. The landscaping people tried a humane thing where they spread weird looking supposedly bad-tasting-to-geese pellets all around the lawn. Evidently it was not toxic, because the geese would rather eat that migrate, and it turned their poop purple, so then the lawns were covered with: 1) geese everywhere, more than ever; 2) weird looking goose-away; 3) purple goose shit. I swear, the purple shit stank worse than the original. I wonder if the landscaping people joked amongst themselves the way the rest of us did. I made various Christmas hunting and cooking suggestions when December came around, with the proviso that the goose-away probably made their flesh taste bad.

@sb Those are AWESOME looking tomatoes!

@Richard Geese FTW!

@Dave Higgins [Main Account] "I don’t aim for contentment because aiming for something can create a mindset of judging the moment against a desire."

Contentment is an inner state that we learn how to maintain through experience and/or discipline of mind. Content as in: "I am all I need to be right now. Things are as they are, and I am content to just do my best (not more than my best, just my best)."

Language is a wondrously vibrant thing; no matter how tightly I think I have it held, it blossoms with myriad possible meanings.

Wasn't challenging the contentment, @Muse; I was speaking of the risk that aiming for something has an implication that one has not achieved it, so can lead to discontent with where one is.

Monday was... okayish? for a Monday? Spent too much time trying and failing to sleep enough, and spun my wheels in some other ways as well. But nothing awful happened. Low gar I guess, but I'll take it.

oh I did get a good laugh at El-Sayed taking that Faux windbag behind the woodshed, so there's that
