Welcome to #CheckIn for FRIDAY 2026-02-06

Muse here,

This question is an important one. Everyone once in their life should stop and consider this. It's clearly foundational to our culture, and should even be asked at job interviews. What is your favourite dinosaur?!

Mine is the apatasaurus! Such stature! What a beautiful swooping back and neck. What gentle giants!

I am willing to accept your favourite birds or lizards in this question.

apatasaurus

Today’s topic is suggested by @Muse but there’s always an element of randomness. Grab your beverage preference (pixel or not), follow Wheaton’s Law and enjoy the space. How can you tell which end of a worm is the head? Tickle it in the middle, see which end laughs.

Program note: Please comment, and feel free to Like this post, but please resist the urge to Share or Repost it. Doing that creates an additional instance of a #Checkin post for a given day, and tends to fragment or dilute the conversations.

Ankylosaurus with a mace tail or a Stegosaurus .
I was looking at fossils and reconstructions at the Museum of the Rockies at Christmas time. They have a fantastic collection , well displayed. They have a series of Triceratops skulls, from very small to very large ( about 7 or 8 ) to show their development.

My favorite dinosaur, by far, is the Tactyldactyl.

Here's the story of the Tactyldactyl...

February 16, 2007
Beware the Tactyldactyl!

The Tactyldactyl (also spelled by those who can't spell as tactildactyl) is a large bird - prehistoric in size. Everyone agrees that Tactyldactyls are brightly colored, but no one seems to be able to say what the colors are. Perhaps every Tactyldactyl is a different color and pattern? And their cry, seldom heard, is said to be something between that of a Loon and a cat's purr.

Flying alone or in groups, Tactyldactyls watch for unsuspecting prey. They are particularly fond of children, especially grumpy children who won't share their toys with their friends.

Tactyldactyls have a most unique form of attack: The Tactyldactyl silently swoops down, often during bright sunlight, and tickles its victims into submission. Once satiated on its victim's laughter the Tactyldactly flies back to its lair. The victims always recover and usually look forward to another visit from the Tactyldactyl.

Tactyldactyls are rarely seen; most senior tickleologists believe that, with the tendency of children to remain indoors (usually playing video games), that Tactyldactyls could become extinct.

Tactyldactyls are not related to their near cousins, the Technodactyls, but they are always willing to sit down (as much as a bird that large can sit down and still maintain its dignity) and share a cup of tea with their good friends the Ductyldactyls.

The stegosaurus is at the top of my list. I love those boney back plates! I'm also quite fond of some more recent megafauna like the glyptodon. Not a dinosaur, but rather dinosaur-esque at the least. They keep unearthing their shells from time to time. Is it too much to hope for that they can be brought back?

I am kind of partial to Sue the T Rex, who currently resides in the Chicago Field Museum. Although I’m not on Twitter/X anymore, her posts there were always pretty funny.

As long as MalteTheDog is fine I'm happy. Early on we took him to meet the local dinosaur herd. It was a walk that we planned to last most of the morning, meant to test if he's easily scared (spoiler: he's not). The walk around the park lasted a good two hours and ended naturally just as hordes of loud and noisy primary school children arrived too.
This dog took the presence of the beasts with ease, like this Brontosaurus tall as a house on the link. A small Triceratops was kinda hidden in a bushy sidepath and that one freaked him out into full defense mode. =) Overall, a chill day for all of us.

two of these built a nest next to an intersection—and one of them pecked the bumper off a car 😳 when it stopped for the traffic light

some brave fish & wildlife officers relocated the nest

we had loads of them in our old neighborhood, not so many here, we've traded them for sea birds

Malte was awarded an award for lifetime cuteness of floofness recently. The gift associated with the award ceremony was one specimen like this, it was adopted instantly and carried like a trophy.

And it has survived to this day (handful of days).
