Welcome to #CheckIn for TUESDAY 2026-10-20

Muse here,

I was an avid comic strip reader when I was a kid. When I started university I felt that since I was now an adult, I should regularly read the newspaper. This proved problematic. Reading the news everyday genuinely depressed me. However, the Sunday paper provided an overview of the week's events AND carried all the colour comic strips! A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down. So, I switched to only subscribing to the Sunday edition.

For whatever reason I loved Spiderman from when I was very little all the way through my university years. Charlie Brown was deeply loved. Later on Bloom County became a favourite. The Far Side was loved not only because it was funny, but because Gary Larson spent time at the University of Washington as well, particularly late at night at our museum of natural history! (and you wondered from where he got his ideas)

Do you have a favourite comic strip? Care to share a funny instance?

Quack!

Today’s topic is suggested by @Muse but there’s always an element of randomness. Grab your beverage preference (pixel or not), follow Wheaton’s Law and enjoy the space.

The Joke strips I read are limited, I read more slice of life, events awareness or long running story comics.

The Devil's Panties Slice of Life with Social Commentary. Long Running. Numerous books published of it over the years and sold at conventions.

Irregular Web Comic (Now in repeat mode, storys told with legos and attached science lectures and travel stuff

Questionable Content Long Running Story Comic in a World where Robotics & AI went in a much nicer direction

El Goonish Shive Alternative modern reality where Immortals, Magic, Secret Government Agencies and Aliens have a complex Masquerade going on and the teenagers in the middle of it.

Joy Of Tech humor About Our Modern Tech Age, with humorous Polls. Including Personified Logos of tech brands.

XKCD Joke Strip With Sophisticated Science/Technology Edge . Make sure to look for the pop ups.

Dork Tower Long Running Strip with some continuity and real world event influence about Gamers, Cartoonists, Game Shops, Librarians, and a talking humanoid muskrat. Used to be carried in some gaming magazines. Artist/Author also involved in the Tabletop Gaming industry.

Pearls Before Swine Mostly a joke strip these days, but sometimes has ongoing running gags. Talking Animals in human situations and a psychology representation of events as seen thru the eyes of humanoid Rat, Pig and Goat and their neighbors, with 4th wall crossobers with the Cartoonist who loves his puns and puzzles. Also syndicated in newspapers.

Aurora Complex Fantasy World Story with Avatars, Gods, Magicians and Complex Lives. (also published as books)

Wilde Life Unusual Fantasy/Horror comic with continuing cast and storylines set in Podunk Oklahoma. Folklore entwined with the modern world.

Doonesbury Doonesbury. In 20 year old repeat mode 6 days a week, and one fresh new comic on current events on Sundays. Pretty sure everyone knows of this one.

Existential Comics Philosophy arguments brough to life (see Plato bang heads with Nietzsche and Sartre over whether to tip the waiter). Also has popups.

Scandinavia And the World only updated a few times a year now. Observations on the world thru Personified Countries, including their languages, customs, reputations, sports, holidays, etc.

Widdershins Recently completed story comic set in an Alternative Victorian England where there is magic and magicians, but mostly it works in only a few specific locations. Also Weird Steamtech/mechanical technology. This was published in graphic novel form upon completion.

Since I was a little I have loved 1-6 panel comics, the kind most often found in the newspaper. The only thing that kept my subscription to the Washington Post going until 2024 was the funnies.
As I was a 'weird kid' I carried around several comic collections in my kid briefcase. I was mocked. I even collected editorial cartoons and have several books of them. Herblock was a fave.
Peanuts, Wizard of Id, Broomhilda, Pogo, Doonesbury, B. Kliban, Far Side, Pearls Before Swine, Calvin and Hobbes, Cul de Sac , early Dilbert. Zippy the Pinhead, Bloom County, Get Fuzzy, For Better or For Worse, Fasttrack, Sally Forth, Reply All. Dr. Fun
I clipped Doonesbury for years and had rubber banded bundles lying around till the mid 2000's going back to the late 70's. They got tossed eventually, except for the 'keepers'.
I have switched over to online versions of some of these, mostly courtesy of folks posting them to the forums I read.
My past and current webcomic favorites are Sluggy Freelance, xkcd, Penny Arcade!, Quantum Vibe, Megatokyo, Tom Gauld, Li Chen, Oglaf, SMBC, Existential Comics , Wondermark, War and Peas, Grickle, Poorly Drawn Lines. I followed Sinfest for a number of years, but the artist turned into a 'bad person' like Scott Adams only worse.
Here are a couple of my all time favorite Pearls before swine comics, the second one needs some squints

I follow a lot of comics on Facebook and on RSS feeds. You'll see me repost the best ones over here. I can't make it without my daily dose of Calvin and Hobbes. One of my favorites is Wrong Hands. Here's today's entry.

Earliest comics were Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Like, as soon as I could read, or almost.

The Mortadelo and Filemon, the Ibanez comics that were Clever and Smart in German. Read some in Spanish later. Totally over the top style, wildly imaginative, two absolutely not smart secret service agents causing trouble left and right.

Years in primary school pocket money were invested into MAD issues. Pages full of comic strips, Spy vs Spy a favourite, and the fingernail sized mini drawings in between were super fun - I understood them as commentary on societal issues.

When my friends got into reading Manga I shrugged. Around 8th grade and on, nothing happened in my comic universe other than Sandman and Maus.

At some point I chuckled over an NSFW comic loosely about an Ice Queen unable to climax. Very many curious characters around that, and some gorgeous detail in image and dialogue: "... Is he stuck?" - "Yeth".

Recent Korean series I watch, many are made from webtoons that proved highly successful in Korea. Me, I fail to see much of an appeal in the original. I tried. But the series I watched (Pyramid Game, Signal, Sisyphus and whatnot) were among the harshest and heftiest, wildly painted and best told stories I've ever enjoyed. Go figure.

I dedicated my master's thesis to Bill the Cat - Ack! Thppt!

I love The Far Side, too.

@Kenny Chaffin I have that one on a sweatshirt. 🙂

Here's another favorite.

Sunday comics, yes.
Tracing comics and making Play-Doh copies were the best. Archie for characters. DC Comics FTW, though I am a big Jack Kirby fan. Harvey Kurtzman and the Mad Magazine crew. Druillet and Giraud came later.
The Hernandez Brothers from the get-go. 44 years of fandom.
These days it's mostly Jesse Doucette and Lalo Alcaraz along with Blue Delliiquanti

How has no one mentioned War and Peas yet. Turns out, surprising to me because I'm a dork maybe a little, authors Elisabeth Pich und Jonathan Kunz are very German. Been doing the comic for 15 years now and commenting on everything beautifully.
