Welcome to #checkin for Saturday, August 1st, 2026


Good evening/morning/afternoon, and welcome to today's #checkin. Another month is done; today the weather was quite nice, just around 25C max with a bit of a breeze in between. So in the evening I went to the Libori fun fair and watched a Balkan-Disco-Ska/unk band from Chemnitz (Eastern Germany). They were really nice and also had some fun covers.
The streets were full of people everywhere. Tomorrow is the last day and I expect it to be crowded in the afternoon as there are also open shops.
As the Pader river sources are in the center of the city in Paderborn, it is a really nice place to sit and relax near the cathedral.

"Reset with a weekly quiet hour" is not a bad idea. I have to get used to seeing August as back-to-school month instead of September. It used to be we thought about doing new things then.

Chiefly, however I will spend August hibernating near air conditioning because it's usually our worst month for heat and humidity. It's uncharacteristically cool today but it has rained steadily all day and is not stopping. When it does and the heat returns, there'll be hell to pay with the humidity. Glad I'm not in one of the flood zones. Some areas near the river have reached flood stage.

I could stand to part with quite a few unneeded items.

August is also hunker-down-and-survive season here in FL, and we (by which I mean just me 😒) should probably check some loose ends before the peak of hurricane season in September

because that probably ain't happening

fresh fruit seasons have pretty much come and gone... we get stuff early

there might be a tomato crop coming in now—I hear we get 3 of those

Mild summer here in Berlin mostly. Uncharacteristically cool-ish, days below 30C all over.

Also more than usual rain by amount, rainy days more frequent too, both hefty showers and, like now, light rain two days in a row.
Exceptionally warm days: just 2 in July at ~38C.

Cleaning my mum's apartment saw good progress. Will start with the basement storage end of the week.

Statistics prove me wrong though. Subjectively guessing is a bad guide for this.

Almost no region is wetter/had more precipitation overall. Berlin regional/north east had the driest ever spring (-44%), so we're at half the amount of previous years over long time values (~260mm v 560mm). D:

This is weather data from 1881 to present, and while some regions have received more rain, the distribution is all over the place, regionalized, and most places are drier than ever.

August historically has been our worst month in regards to heat, but I'm not sure it will be this year considering the high temps we've already seen this year. It was 87F when I went to bed and had been much higher during the day. But so far they are not predicting any 100F days this week coming for us,
⇧
