Welcome to #CheckIn for SATURDAY 2025-05-24

It's a holiday weekend here. Memorial Day. We're supposed to honor our war dead... or as the current president calls them, "suckers and losers."

Well, never mind that. It's also #Caturday, so get your cat pix on.

Side note - this is going up a little early. If it wasn't going to be early, it was going to be late. Which is worse?

Today’s topic is posted by @((( David "Kahomono" Frier ))) but there’s always an element of randomness. Grab your beverage preference (pixel or not), follow Wheaton’s Law and enjoy the space.

The CheckIn team is looking for an additional mod with the loss of 2 of us from the rotation - @su ann lim and @Rod Mesa. Please contact @Cass to find out more.

Evening! The sky finally stopped leaking and has changed color. I think it's alkaline.

New mattress testing tonight. Might thaw out a steak to grill this weekend. At least look under the grill cover to see who might have taken up residence.
The garden has provided me with a shishito pepper and a couple of sugar snap peas. Some fresh veggies to offset the meat.
in reply to CheckIn Posting

We are still that same boring blue sky. Wish we had leaking!
in reply to CheckIn Posting

Looking forward to some warming weather here in the PNW this weekend!

Saturday will be cleaning day, as my son will be here Sunday and Monday on his long weekend leave from the Air Force. Not much else going on.

Here are my feline roomies, Daphne (in front) and Velma (in back).

Desmond is very photogenic. It's so hard to get a good photo of Moki, and she is so cute!
in reply to CheckIn Posting

By the way, a little help here. I have recently had eye surgery in both eyes in order to forget about glasses. My crystalline lens was substituted by a multi-focal lens which allows you to focus at reading, medium and long distance.
Has anybody had this done? What has your experience been like?
in reply to CheckIn Posting

Mum in hospital, but finally getting better, had her gallbladder removed at 93. So it's a coming and going to hospital weekend. We had the Europa League final here in Bilbao, Tottenham Hotspur defeated Manchester United 1-0 . So the city was invaded by British fans. Besides drinking all the beer reservoir in town they behaved correctly.
in reply to CheckIn Posting

@Jon Alcibar (main) I've heard good things about that eye surgery! I hope your mother recovers well.
in reply to CheckIn Posting

Good morning/afternoon, heading home to Paderborn now
in reply to CheckIn Posting

I've got one more fence post to replace....then some yard work...
in reply to CheckIn Posting

That type of lens is news to me @Jon Alcibar (main). Wishing a speedy recovery for mom.
Yard work? Sadly, due to health concerns, maintenance has been much deferred, and the grounds are a mess. I hope to address at least some of this today.

Here's a pic of my old gal catching some afternoon rays:

in reply to CheckIn Posting

@Jon Alcibar (main) that sounds like the lenses they offered me when I got my cataracts fixed. I opted for the plain ones though, so I'm not much help.
in reply to CheckIn Posting

oh and re: leaking, we're still in pretty serious drought here but the rainy season is apparently starting Monday (sorry, tourists)—30% or more rain chance every day
in reply to CheckIn Posting

Recovering from the plantar faciitis..ugh, been 21 yrs since the last such attack, but two days of serious pain was enough of a reminder - only shoes with arch support! So no more crocs, or anything like that. Bugger, but walking is a needful thing...don't know if I can attach a kitteh pic.. nope, will post on my acct...will sleep late, enjoy listening to the audio version of 'The Murderbot Diaries'
in reply to CheckIn Posting

Ugh. Yard work. I am in arrears. A very wet cold front took its time going through and now I will have to wear an extra shirt when I splash to my coffeeshop to caffeine-doodle. Note: I always carry a towel, as I only do this outside, and there is not always a supply of dry seats. It is the weekend so they have croissants, both chocolate and normal. Chocolate, please!
in reply to CheckIn Posting

Ruh roh, the sky is changing back. I think it's going to leak again.
in reply to CheckIn Posting

And I'm back home. All trains more or less on time.
I hope I can catch up with some sleep 😴 💤
in reply to CheckIn Posting

We've got sun and cloud after several days of clouds and urban level rain. I've been waiting to do laundry until the sun shines so that's today. Still a bit cool so making beef stroganoff for our main meal.

@Jon Alcibar (main) I had a single vision implanted lens for decades and it was great. Wouldn't hesitate to get a multifocal one.

@((( David "Kahomono" Frier ))) if I don't do early I miss sleep so early it is…

in reply to CheckIn Posting

only shoes with arch support

Yuppers. Same for me, for the same reason, though I have gotten better enough to be able to go barefoot around the house.

in reply to CheckIn Posting

go barefoot around the house

What are these "shoes" of which you speak?

in reply to CheckIn Posting

Oh Lordy @Deb Zaccaro-Rojas!!! I've been fighting that since December....just now getting back to being able to do my walks and much lowered mileage! I'm beginning to think it's permanent....still hope not though.!

Massaging it with a baseball seems to help most...

in reply to CheckIn Posting

I had one flare-up of plantar fasciitis, several years ago. Lasted several months. Not diagnosed per se, but the classic symptoms. I must be a glutton for punishment, as I hiked 14 miles with it one time (the Old Rag loop in Shenandoah NP). I will say that I enjoy hiking in the woods more than almost anything in the whole wide world. Evidently including "not cringing in pain". I was kind of happy that one half of our group got separated from the other and we had to stop for a longer-than-usual break to let them catch up with us.
in reply to CheckIn Posting

Damn, I've been away for a long time. A colleague and I were revising a paper for resubmission for publication (accomplished on Thursday!) and a host of other real world concerns (like health insurance and property taxes, not to mention an emergency situation with the fish pond in my back yard).

I have missed you all.

in reply to CheckIn Posting

Alas I have no cat pictures to share right now, nor of Tahoma

All of the tomato plants are in the ground now.

in reply to CheckIn Posting

@Deb Zaccaro-Rojas - only shoes with arch support!

I was born with flat feet. Though with the diagnosis of EDS, it might be better described as having a foot not strong enough to support my weight. After years of ballet I did in fact develop an arch. But my whole life I have had to wear corrective shoes.

As a child only one style fit my narrow feet: the saddle oxford. Blech! The podiatrist now has me wearing Hoka shoes.

in reply to CheckIn Posting

Oh, wow! I'm so sorry to hear that I'm not the only sufferer of this condition, but..yeah. Never had arches. Always had flat feet. Have had (now) three spats with the damned plantar fasciitis. First was right after Grad School - did a lot of walking in Pgh. Second time was just before going off to Pennsic - now THAT was an awful time - baking while 'camping' in a freaking cornfield with NO shade! I got sunburns from that which didn't fade til December! And hobbling all over while being baked alive! Hell. One week cured me of ever doing 'Pennsic' ever again. Five years working thru August and Sept in the Catskill Mtns at RenFaire was nothing as bad as a week in late August baking in a cleared cornfield just north of Pgh! That is, however afterwards, when I found out there were exercises to help eleviate Plantar Fasciitis! Move your foot up, back against the shin, curling the toes back and tight, then stretch out the foot, spreading out the toes as well as far as you can. This helps a LOT
in reply to CheckIn Posting

I have the opposite problem, with extra high arches.
Ankle problems are a constant. 3rd party insoles ( not prescription thank goodness ) make shoes bearable. Walking without shoes is a short distance endurance sport. Having Mortons Neuroma in one foot for a few years and now both is a bother as well.

Even if you don't do Mastodon, this account is worth clicking around in anyway: cats and other pets with hats, as in #sillySummerHatting - see mastodon.social/deck/@eclectec…
in reply to CheckIn Posting

I had PF once and if I never have it again, it will be too soon. Doctor Google said it would resolve in about 6 months 🙄 18 months later...

and I'm a high arch/high instep person
Birks helped some—good thing I worked somewhere that open-toed shoes were ok

in reply to CheckIn Posting

i still have a pair of Birks. They are barely holding together after so many years.
they were the best for my feet.

My first roomate at college was the son of the fellow who invented Topsiders. But that son was an asshole.
in reply to CheckIn Posting

@Muse I have a pair of... Boston?... clogs, I should have known that 🤦‍♀️

Sperry. One of the first things the spoiled rich kid did was ridicule my "substandard" stereo. He also like to imply that my public high school school was shit, and laughable.
