Welcome to #CheckIn for SUNDAY 2026-03-29

We here in the Fediverse may or may not be aware of just how awful most "social media" is. I have a presence on LinkedIn, so I have some small amount of exposure to that hellscape. But I do not partake of any of the other billionaire-run monstrosities - Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, Twitter, or any of them.

Those of you who have to, or even choose to, engage with those sites, how do you defend yourself against the corrosive effects? Or do you just YOLO and dive in?

This post comes to you from @((( David "Kahomono" Frier ))) via the official #checkin posting account. Program note: Please comment, and feel free to Like this post, but please resist the urge to Share/Boost/Repost it. Doing that creates an additional instance of a #checkin post for a given day, and tends to fragment or dilute the conversations.

The CheckIn team is looking for an additional mod with the loss of 2 of us from the rotation - @su ann lim and @Rod Mesa. Please contact @Cass to find out more.

I have LinkedIn just because people kept looking for me on there and when they couldn't find me they started looking elsewhere and I didn't want them accidently finding any of my real accounts.

My real Facebook is under a nickname, and I made one under my real name again just to keep coworkers and potential employers from looking too deep. I interact with them just enough to make them look active. I got Facebook back when it was the only option, and kept it because I can't convince my friends and family to go anywhere else. I follow only people I know in real life and a few businesses. I use the Feeds instead of the For You page, so I don't get all the "suggested for you" nonsense.

For other sites like this one or Bluesky, I carefully curate my followers and block judiciously to make sure I see what I want and none of the garbage. I don't engage with trolls who might find a post, just block and move on.

I am on here and Facebook and the only reason I can stand Facebook is because of a browser extension that allows me to pick and choose how to customize it. Thankfully, the developer works hard to keep up with changes by Facebook.

I also almost never post publicly there, which insulates me from nastiness. Facebook is a big tool for ministry communication and connection. My "friends" are a combination of former colleagues, people I know IRL, and quite a few friends of friends. I also keep in touch with a few former G-Plussers over there and I belong to a couple of art pottery collectors groups and administer a page of my own that connects to my website on Catholic liturgy.

I basically use social media as a toy, a distraction, a place to play
Yes, I often do get discouraged by the sheer idiocy and cruelty of parts of humanity I see represented -- but that's us, and I have to deal with us anywhere. At least virtually I can log out any time. Sometimes I enjoy engaging in battle, but it does get too annoying after not much time. What else am I going to do. I am not in a position to do actual socializing, and I need to be aware of the trends and issues for inform my writing.

Here, Masto, bsky, and Meta 'cause all the old folks are on there.
Dude, if I weren't, I wouldn't know that my mom's bestie-cousin passed away the day before. I promised my grandmother that I would not forget her family. (I also promised that I would not forget that I was a Mexican, but that's another story.)
Still waiting to hear when the memorial will be for my late aunt Esther (also my mom's name) who went by the nickname "Huera" (whitey) while my mom went by "Morena" (brown). Facebook has its purpose for me. Not for long, though. Most of that generation is gone. Hell, most of MY generation is gone. The youngsters all seem to be on something new every week.

After we moved house I shut down my Facebook account. I used it for the marketplace in order to give away a stack of stuff, then it was gone. I did my best to make sure friends had my other contact details. But for the most part, it felt like hardly anyone was a real friend. We were all just ghosts of friends and dopamine hits. A few friends I still see on occasion.

Much social media is like a pile of molasses. It's sugary sweet, but it has no nutrition, and the more you interact with it, the more stuck you are.

I dislike LinkedIn, but I'm kind of there. Sometimes it's necessary. I'm definitely on YouTube. Mastodon is all right.

I'm here, Mastodon and Reddit. I stick to my feeds and it's worked well enough.

We tried to leave Raro but the plane broke so we're here until tomorrow when we fly home through Hawai'i & Seattle. We are in a very nice resort but it's posting down reason so we won't see s sunset or anything. We missed an island night buffet by ordering a la carte 👍 the airline allowed $50 pp for supper and $25 pp for breakfast so we shouldn't have a lot of extra expense.

Never did Facebook. I'm trying to get my mother off of it but "the pictures from the kids" keep her locked in.

My wife makes things up - a few years back the WSJ did a page one story about how she has fabricated a false identity.

Linked in - I'm on it but I don't use it.

I still have a twitter account, but I don't use it.

Farcebook is for IRL friends/fam and for support/self-help groups. There was talk of moving such groups to Discord, but then they got on the IPO train or some such and that was the end of that. Got locked out of MeWe when they did the blockchain thing... thought about making another acct but the blockchain thing seems skeevy so nah. Did not close my Xitter acct; use it only rarely to yell at various entities who stubbornly refuse to decamp to bsky (most often, media who are spreading bullshit). Do a lot of blocking every time I'm there. Got roped into Linkedin when my most recent employer downsized. Set up a 2nd acct with an alias when I found out that paid subscribers can see who visits their pages. Real acct has very little info. It was flippant at first because I didn't want to be there, but after I got the alias I decided to tighten up the real one.

oh and I'm on bsky obvs

No Masto—I went with Friendica instead, hoping to bridge the gap, but it's hit or miss. Insta was mobile-only for a while; my phone is backup, not my main device, so nope. Not a video fan so never had TikTok.

I have a LinkedIn profile - I didn't start it, a work Mgr long since moved on created it. It's there, I do nothing with it. I have a fakeboot acct to keep in contact with folks who mean a lot to me IRL but just last night got on - last time had been 8+ wks since last on, and found a LOT of crazy shite from folks who - in reality - I have no idea who they even ARE anymore. So I did a massive delete of accts of folks I do not know anymore. Kept the ones I care about and only use falseboot (Joyce is one of them, Robert Lai is another.) Other than that, it's only Diaspora.

I knew I was forgetting something... reddit. Signed up to get the annual Cake Day discount from my MVNO, and to get general customer service/tech support from them. Then they sold themselves to private equity. The neutered subreddit still exists, barely. Then reddit IPO'd. Now I mostly end up there from article links or search results. It's remarkably anti-Trump there, considering... but I find myself needing a reason to visit 🤷‍♀️

I was unable to find any way to get enough value out of those platforms and the interactions with the people who use them to make it worth my time a decade ago.

Assuming I have a choice in getting another job (rather than commit suicide because there are no jobs for old people in the United States of America due to eugenic policies) I do not intend to use LinkedIn again.

At this point it's pure dumb luck if I manage to get the means of life via a job. The fewer wealthy parasites infesting my life, the better for my overall health until my time comes.

LinkedIn from early on. Xing too, from the days when that still was OpenBC. Not an active user though. Recruiter spam comes in waves, my filter works👋

Facebook for a couple of days beforebefore the New York trip. Failed to make contact with people via chat, although I did find them. Before that, last loginlogin was pre Covid.
