Welcome to #CheckIn for Monday, July 13

Hi there, Cass here.

When I was a teen I was really good at observing behaviour and extrapolating events. I had found the story behind my name and decided to live up to it. People really hated it so I stopped mentioning it and gradually paid less attention to stuff as I got engulfed in adulting. Now that adulting takes less effort, I have time to observe more and temper expectations.

Have people ever thought you had mysterious, perhaps supernatural, skills?

@cass - Is "Cass" short for Cassiopeia, Casper, Cassandra... and if the latter are we supposed to believe that explanation?

I have no skills --- but I once worked on a play that contained a beauty contest and in the talent contest one of the contestants said that her talent was having no personality. (I don't remember much else about the play except that it involved two-headed space aliens who invaded Earth and began eating people, so they hired a PR firm to improve their image, but the firm was run by the underground resistance. It was a weird play.)

When I was a kid I was told that if I could touch my tongue to my elbow that I would turn into a boy. Then, I read a book where the little girl is told that if she can touch her tongue to her elbow, she will turn into a fairy. I decided either one of those would be all right.

So, I tried and actually managed to do it! I can touch my tongue to my elbow! Now I know it's because my connective tissue is overly loose. Oh well, can't blame me for trying!

I was completely unthrilled to learn my name given by my adoptive mother was a 1950's B grade scream actress. Yep, that's about what I figured. I also figured what the name I came with was because my adoptive mother hated it so much. I think I would have preferred Charlene.

Yes. Older folks with poor tech skills think I am a genius because I am comfortable with tech.

Also, at a long ago interview, I sped through the editing and knowledge tests at warp speed, and then managed to produce a sample brochure cover using software I'd never seen before.

I think I scared them. Did not get the job. But ended up somewhere else that was better. And I am still friendly with one of the people I met at that job.

My first non-nepotistic job in the software industry was as a glorified clerk temp. It was a full time job, but I could do in 4 hours what the previous guy could do in 8. One of my several tasks was entering bug reports from forms. There was some bug in the bug database that prevented some program manager from accessing it. I mean, I knew BASIC and a bit of C and assembly at the time, not whatever DB programming language it was written in. I discovered that I could open and edit the DB files on my computer, and one can often understand what's going on despite the language, so I found and fixed the bug, and took a printout of the famous bug up and gave it to the program manager. I was soon hired full time, and that has made all the difference.

Several times, as "the computer person" of the crowd associated with Mrs. Dean (my own crowd was mostly "the computer person" of their respective friend networks), I have been invited over to check out somebody's machine that wasn't working. In my presence everything was working fine, and usually it kept working.

Back in the before times, when we had an actual analog land line ( with no caller ID at that point ), I would freak my MIL out by answering the phone and just saying Hi Sharon. I could hear the distinctive hiss of long distance. Or I just knew it was her.
Early in the workday on 9/11 I was sitting at my desk and the voice in my head said move your money out of stocks now. I have a curious relationship with that voice, it often steers me in the correct direction. I logged in to the TSP portal and shifted most of my 401k into government bonds. 5 minutes later one of the bosses called me up and asked for a tv antenna, there was something happening and they wanted to watch the news. That was kind of spooky.
I often get an 'inkling' that I will hear from a specific person, and sure enough I will get a call, email, or letter within a short time. It's been happening for a long time, since I was a kid.

There is a theory among some of my acquaintances that I'm an ancient fae entity, which resurfaces whenever do something that could be odd or could just be a result of the witness being distracted, such as I greet someone just as they are getting out of the car despite them not having noticed me when they drove up.

In line with the tales about ancient fae entities being tricksy but never actually lying, I have resolved to never comment about whether I am an ancient fae entity until I'm asked a direct question.

Besides being the person that everyone asks because I can find answers to almost anything, my super power is listening to a piece of music in the car, getting out of the car, going into a store, coming out later and without thinking about it knowing exactly where the music left off and exactly what pitch and lyric to sing along with. I guess that means I have a better than average memory for music. I can also tell you within three or four notes whether I have ever heard a piece of music before.

I have a freak talent of being able to tell a woman is pregnant early in the pregnancy. I surprised two sisters-in-law that way, by asking them how far along they were, which in retrospect may have been a rude question to ask. Both times they hadn't told anyone yet. It's actually happened three times, but the first time I was about 5 years old, and I knew my adoptive mother was pregnant before she was showing.
in reply to CheckIn Posting

If a woman has not told me she is pregnant, I would not suggest I thought she was if she were giving birth on my kitchen table.

Mr. Stranger had not heard this, and upon observing the expanding belly of the young co-owner of one of our favorite restaurants some years ago, blithely inquired as to her due date 😳

when he returned to the table and reported this to me, I nearly choked on my food as I said "YOU WHAT?!"

I really had to explain to a 50-something man that one does nottttttt assume that fat female bellies contain babies (or maybe they do, and the host is not thrilled about it or whatever and doesn't want to discuss it)

....so he then proceeded to make it that much worse by going back and apologizing to her for asking 🤦‍♀️ even though she was in fact pg and happy about it

circling back to QOD, he has occasionally demonstrated a knack for knowing the gender of buns-in-ovens though, even before technology got good at it 🤔

I usually have a big rubber mallet handy to perform light duty percussive maintenance.

My catalog has a more studly percussive maintenance kit ...

Rubber chicken? There's an RFC for the R. I. T. A. device!

It's something you whack into the customers' face, or back of their head to improve clearness of direction (yours, which they didn't understand or follow), clarity of communication (their readiness to follow it) and generally for opinion amplification, strictly scientific and unidirectionally by kinetic method.

Almost percussive maintenance, but for softer tissue.

Many times I've been phantasizing about it. I'd have the excuse "it's a dog toy" now. :p

The competitive aspect though kicked in, so I beat idiots by patience nowadays.

If that fails I know a cat5'o'nine tails could do the trick.

Sigh.
