Welcome to #checkin for Friday, January 16, 2026!

Good evening/afternoon/morning, everyone, and welcome to today's #checkin. Today it felt a bit like spring with temps around 14°C and sun. However, the wind still felt cold. Earlier today I bought a new book, which fits perfectly as today is Appreciate a Dragon Day.
I sometimes feel like a book dragon...But it's not hoarding if it's books.

So who is your favorite dragon? Or what other fantasy characters do you like?

Oh, I am definitely a Dragon. I was born in the Chinese Year of the Dragon - no, I won't mention which one. As a Dragon I tend to hoard books and shiny things - mostly glass beads....I also have a few Chinese antiques, which I got as hand-me-downs from my Grandparents who lived in China for a bit in the 1920's...(both of which have Dragons on them)

Did King Pellinore ever catch up with the Questing Beast?

Grendel was misunderstood. (But his mother was a terror - we once had a cat we named "Grendel's Mother".)

I am a Mothra fan - uh oh, that song by the two tiny fairies is now stuck in my head.

I too am a fan of Smaug and enjoy the Hildebrand image. I also have appreciated the dragon imagery associated with St George... where the dragon unfortunately is an allegorical representation of error.

Also enjoyable are the rare images of St. Martha, Sister of Lazarus, who according to medieval legend, tamed a dragon that was terrorizing a town in France.

Dragon Shills

Of course there are no demons.
They are mere fictitious myth, fablers’ wares.
And Dragons are not fearful, not evil, never
terrifying agents of injustice, conveyors of brutal pain.
Dragons rise, glide, inspire awe;
strikingly majestic, lovers of beauty,
protectors of frail humanity, dispense peace,
prosperity, gifts of benevolent husbandry.
Their hellish flame, but a clever demonstration, a show.
So entertaining, so brilliant a display for us below.
Yes, they soar and claim vast territory as their own;
their largesse dependent on wide airways for discharging
smoke and fire, open plains to spread immense wings.
We wouldn’t want them cramped, self-singed, inconvenienced.
Dragons, special beings, above our meted stations, oversee,
keep our village tucked and safe, productive, running right.
Insinuate our primal lizard brains persuasively, teach these
hungry, humble children to feed their might.

I have quite a few dragon books and even some video games... including some where you can play as a dragon! I particularly recommend:

A game where you can choose to become a dragon:

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous

And a game with a dragon in it:

Shadowrun: Dragonfall

I've mentioned them before but my current favourite dragon books are the Axtara series.

Oh! And how could I forget the Angels with Scaly Wings visual novel and comic?

This is a good list of dragon books - but they're missing Ursula Vernon's Dragonbreath series!

In terms of appearance my favorite is Sol Regem from "The Dragon Prince":

dragonprince.fandom.com/wiki/S…

In terms of endearment of the heart it's Igneel from "Fairytail"

fairytail.fandom.com/wiki/Igne…

In terms of battle it's the "Flame Dragon" from "Gate"

gate.fandom.com/wiki/Flame_Dra…

Why yes I watch a lot of cartoons, why do you ask? ;P

Tiger here too. Dragons.. well there's Fuchur from Ende's Neverending Story. Watching the movie as a kid both traumatized me because the book was so much more vivid and my imagination so very different from what I saw on the screen. Then again, Fuchur looks like a flying dog which i did not understand at the time. Not the look I expected, but the one character they got right. The 10yo me learned to distinguish between stories in a book and the concept of a movie adaptation.

Nevertheless I got hooked to the screen for quite a while. And I went to see this film a few times on my own to get over the initial shock and disappointment.

The funniest dragon I met was in a kid's book I read to my son. Super cute dragon kid Der kleine Drache Kokonuss who goes to school and experiments with things chemistry and whatnot, and asks very many questions, with troubles ahead.
