How to Scan for Devices on Your Wi-Fi Network | Make Tech Easier

If you think someone is using your Wi-Fi network without permission, you probably need to work on your Wi-Fi security – a well-secured network is pretty hard to crack. To confirm your suspicions, though, you’ll need to check your network and see what’s going on there.

OpenWRT on a Netgear DM200 ADSL Modem

Another bit of craptacular consumer tech gets the boot.

Ever since picking up a new DSL modem a ways back I'd been wanting to get OpenWRT up and running on it. That process turned out to be ... involved. Though with a bit of path-smoothing it could have gone far better.

The major pitfalls encountered were:
  • Determining the proper flashing method for installing the OpenWRT firmware. Which affects the next point:
  • Determining which OpenWRT firmware to install.
  • Determining how to recover from failed attempts and revert to Netgear's OEM firmware.
  • Properly configuring the WAN DSL interface.
  • Having the appropriate documentation available whilst offline during various experiments.
OpenWRT's documentation is excellent -- far better in detail, substance, and quantity than Netgear's DM200 offerings... show more

Article: Network Redirections in Bash.

by Anmol Sarma - software developer from Bengaluru ( #India ).

Preview/extract:

[...] it sends a UDP datagram containing a random number to port 1234 every 250 ms.

while true; do echo $RANDOM > /dev/udp/127.0.0.1/1234; sleep 0.25; done

I didn’t recall ever seeing a /dev/udp and so was a bit surprised that it worked.
Seemingly, a normal UDP socket was being created and written to using the regular sycall interface. That refuted my initial suspicion that some kind of a special file backed by the kernel was involved.
But who was actually creating the socket?
A peek at Bash’s code answered that question [...]

Was meint Ihr?

The Fall of Google+

Pitched internally as an answer to the competitive threat posed by Facebook, project “Emerald Sea” eventually became Google+. I remember Joseph Smarr and Chris Messina writing back in 2011 something to the effect that ‘sharing on the web was broken,’ which was what first gave me the sense that this team wasn’t only interested in building a Facebook killer. They wanted to use Google’s strengths in processing information to reinvent what it meant to share information on the web.
What Happened? Where Did Things Go So VERY HORRIBLY WRONG?

The Fall of Google+

What if any options are there for running Federated social networking tools on or through #OpenWRT or related router systems on a single-user or household basis?

I'm trying to coordinate and gather information for #googleplus (and other) users looking to migrate to Fediverse platforms, and I'm aware that OpenWRT, #Turris (I have a #TurrisOmnia), and several other router platforms can run services, mostly #NextCloud that I'm aware.

Is #diaspora itself viable on these systems? I'm thinking that may be ambitious.

If not, what are considerations for running a small node through a router? Primary considerations would be capacity planning, bandwidth and load impacts, and configuration and security considerations.

Hoping there's some expertise here.

Quick Mesh Project

Easy deployment of Mesh networks

Quick Mesh Project (qMp) is a system for easily deploying Mesh/MANET networks using Wi-Fi technology.

qMp has been designed for being used in any scenario such as free community networks, corporate networks, large social events, quick network deployments, etc.

It is a firmware for embedded network devices, based on the OpenWrt/LEDE Linux operating system
It provides an easy way to set up MESH networks, no matter if they are wired or WiFi -or a mix of both-
It is a fast and reliable way to extend an Internet up-link to end-users

Layer 4 (Transport) - in the case of Mastodon, it is entirely TCP.

Layer 5 (Session) - from now on, things get a little fuzzy, I believe this layer is implemented in the Mastodon application itself. HTTPS probably belongs here?

Layer 6 (Presentation) - this is probably ActivityPub?

Layer 7 (Application) - this is the web interface you interact with

As I mentioned, the last 3 layers get a bit fuzzy and am not sure if they are entirely applicable, suggestions welcome.

#networking

Fun exercise, let's break down Mastodon into its constituent OSI model layers.

starting from the bottom:

Layer 1 (Physical) - since a lot of Mastodon instances are running on VPSes, this is usually a virtual link, otherwise probably a Cat5e/Cat6 ethernet cable. If you run a Mastodon server on wi-fi, hit me up.

Layer 2 (Data link) - this is either going to be IEEE 802.3 Ethernet or IEEE 802.11 WLAN (Wi-Fi)

Layer 3 (Network) - this is going to be IPv4 and IPv6.

(thread, cont.)
