Jewels from SouthEast LinuxFest 2019 part 1: Noah Chelliah - Why We Need Linux on The Desktop.

MacOS has come along way, Windows 10 is (marginally) better than previous version, is there still hope for Linux on the desktop?

Right now is a golden opportunity for Linux to succeed in a space where everyone else is focusing on mobile or cloud.

Just thinking out loud... Time for a new #machine. Looking for a general #desktop, no gaming. No FANS. I want a FANLESS PC! Something mini but with an ethernet port and a few USBs. Have not been in the market for years. Oh, and I like to make the thing myself. I've never filled up a hard drive (I backup). So like an 80-100 Gb SSD should do. Much more interested in reliability than speed. I'm what should be called a "non-power-user". My preference is for stuff that's like... two years old. Stuff that "power users" think is ancient. A tiny, fanless case. Do these things exist. Do I need to go to a special class of CPU to go fanless. Oh my God! So many questions and it's oddly really hard to get answers.

AMD Quadcore (fanless?)
fanless little case
mini ATX mobo
NO PROPRIETARY DRIVERS (Linux kernel modules work)
several USB ports (six? nicely spaced? on the front of the box?)
Pretty good onboard video and sound

I always think of something at the last second that cascades through every decision I've already made.

Am I the last person to use a #desktop computer? Like... a box with wires attaching the keyboard, mouse and screen to it?

Launch HN: Termius (YC W19) – SSH client that works on desktop and mobile

We are Roman and Dmitry, co-founders of Termius (https://termius.com). Termius is an SSH client that works on desktop and mobile. The big difference with other SSH clients that Termius syncs data across devices using end-to-end encryption.

DevOps, sysadmins, and network engineers benefit from using Termius because they can keep all the information for managing their servers in one secure place, e.g., snippets, connection strings, history, etc. Our product vision is to rebuild the command line experience around an engineer, not around the mainframe where it all started. For example, Termius will help engineers to safely keep information about their servers, shell commands, and terminal logs. This information will be accessible from any device and used to improve productivity, e.g., autocomplete commands in the terminal.

Android Q’s Desktop Mode is real, here’s your first look

You can add app shortcuts to the desktop which launch in freeform multi-windows, a feature which first launched with Android 7.0 Nougat. You can also set a custom wallpaper for the desktop. The status bar and navigation bar seem unchanged, but you have a lot more room to work with now.

It’s possible to enable this desktop mode by going to Developer Options on a Google Pixel, Pixel 2, or Pixel 3running the beta and enabling the “force desktop mode” Developer Option, then launching the activity in the Pixel Launcher using the “GMS” command from above. You’ll need to change your Pixel’s DPI before casting or connecting your phone’s screen to any external displays, though.

This certainly looks interesting and is something I'm going to keep an eye on as we hear about more practical ways this may be used. Looks like Android Q is certainly going to be bringing quite a few new interesting features. I'm also really keen on the full dark mode.

Is so sad starting the #2019 with such arguable article:

7 Things Desktop Linux Needs in 2019

Before to analyze the seven points let me do some free and random considerations, if they were just 7 missing things for the #Desktop #Linux I could surely scream that we finally are in the year of the #LinuxDesktop but then I remembered that #Linux is the kernel while the Desktop belongs to #GNU, hence I already smelled stinky stuff in there. Second Hand Equipment

All of our it devices except the switches and wlan access points were bought second hand. Including smartphones. The desktops and laptops as well as the tft monitors were originally office systems which makes them better suitable for long life usage and power efficency. And of course we saved a lot of money that way.

Buying an office line laptop for some 270 EUR (in Germany) instead of more than 1000 EUR can make such devices affordable. Not really a good idea for gamers which we are not. Our user profile is just communication, office work (such as planning and controlling our incomes and expenses) from time to time watch a movie (downloaded or stream).
