CSS loses case against city of Philadelphia second time in two years about foster care contract

The decision by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit was released Monday. The panel said the city didn’t target the agency because of its religious beliefs but acted only to enforce its own nondiscrimination policy in the face of what seemed to be a clear violation.

In March 2018, a same-sex couple interested in becoming foster parents said they were turned down by Bethany Christian Services because they were lesbian. An Inquirer story about the incident found that CSS had a similar policy not to work with LGBTQ people. Bethany agreed to change its policy to align with the city’s antidiscrimination rules. CSS did not, and the city ended its foster-care contract.

In January, the Drumpf administration granted a waiver to South Carolina, allowing the state to provide federal funding to a foster-care agency that works only with Protestant foster parents. The waiver allows the federally funded

Any Markdown / Pandoc mavens know how to tweak the HTML DOM generated for HTML pages?

I'm looking at one for an article which doesn't seem to generate

<

article> or elements, though if it did either, would make some layout / CSS issues a lot easier to deal with.

Problem now is that when I set additional margins within <blockquote> segements, they don't really or consistently differ from the adjacent <br> elements. I have a sad.

The CSS I'm using, in part (and yes, I can share the full stylesheet, though this seems to be the operative code):
body {
  margin: 1rem auto;
  max-width: 90rem;
  padding: 0 4rem 0.5rem;
  width: auto;
  font-size: 1rem;
  line-height: 1.4;
}

blockquote {
    margin-left: 8em;
    margin-right: 6em;
}

article, p, ol, ul, li, div {
    width: auto;
    max-width: 45rem;
    margin: 0 auto;
    line-height: 1.4;
}

p {
    margin: 1em auto;
}

What happens is that the blockquote margins are acting against the full p... show more

Oof. I just found a nice style framework called Picnic that's significantly lighter than and is almost as pretty as Bulma, and I'm extremely tempted to change my GUTS+ site to it just to take advantage of that sweet lightweight goodness... there are just so many customizations I need to make to get it perfect. 😕 but 36kb is just an incredible improvement over 186kb...

Such a hard choice!

Hyphenation in CSS

Automatic hyphenation on the web has been possible since 2011 and is now broadly supported. There is however far more control available to designers than just turning on hyphens.

Brit prisoners to be kept on the straight and narrow with JavaScript and CSS • The Register

Poor prisoners!
A spokesman for DCMS told El Reg that of the 70 offenders who had taken part in the programme, none had gone on to reoffend.

Probably too busy trying to work out why a misplaced padding turned the layout of a web page into an incomprehensible mess.

Stylus or Tampermonkey like support on any iOS or Android browsers?

I'm still unclear whether there are any plugins similar to Stylus (CSS userstyles) or Tampermonkey (javascript userscripts) available for any web browsers for iOS and/or Android?

Anyone know of anything that works on any mobile browser? Opera? Firefox? Chrome? Safari? Anything?

Things have been busy at work so I haven't had a chance to work on my #CSF (client-side filter), but I want to do some things which mobile users may find useful - alterations of text size in particular.

Thanks!

Ask HN: Is it just me, or is CSS too damn hard?

Hey HN,

I'm a seasoned backend developer and systems administrator, with over 10 years of full-time programming experience. I've worked with anything from Assembly, C, Rust all the way to Python, Erlang, Elixir, PHP, Haskell, Lisp, Clojure.

When it comes to frontend, I have used React, Vue.js, ReasonML, Clojurescript and Elm extensively, and I know my way around web technologies in general. However, ever since I first started programming, I was NEVER able to get the gist behind CSS. I can't center my divs properly. I can't say "hey, CSS, this is the parent div, and all child divs must obey its size". I can't do anything basic on CSS without turning for help.

Incidentally, but very likely related, I always failed to have any glimpse into how design works. I have no idea which colors "go" with which ones, and pretty much all fonts look like the same for me.

I'd like to know the experience from fellow programmers. Is CSS an "... show more
