In March, we announced to roll out support for TLS 1.3 on infosec-handbook.eu soon.

However, instead of only turning it on, we prepared a new server and implemented additional hardening that we will cover in our Web server security series.

If all goes to plan, we will switch to the new server next week. Kindly note that temporary connectivity issues may occur due to DNS reconfiguration.

Thanks and stay secure. 🔒

What Makes a Good (or Bad) Photo? | mono log

What is it that makes a good photo? Is it to do with the 'ingredients' or is it the overall effect? Or the story it tells?

A bad idea: Nextcloud signs public letter, opposing German plan to force decryption of chat

Image/PhotoIt is said that the one thing one can learn from history is that we don’t learn from history. The clipper chip is an example of this, and it shows again today.

It is April 16, 1993. The White House announces the ‘Clipper chip’, officially known as the MYK-78. It was meant for use in secure communication devices like phones, protecting calls from interception by encrypting them.

Each Clipper chip came with a pre-baked, unique secret key, but the chip also had one extra ‘feature’: the cryptographic key was not just known to the recipient, but also to law enforcement agencies like the CIA and FBI. In a slight nod to privacy, the ‘backdoor key’ was to be split in two and shared between two federal agencies, blocking any single party from use.

The tech world protested: weakening encryption by building in a back door was a bad idea. Only one device was ever produced, by AT&T Bel... show more

For anyone afflicted with #Medium that wants to switch to their own #blog, here's a (relatively) simple tool with a step-by-step gif of how to use it to migrate from Medium to a Github-hosted blog:

https://github.com/mathieudutour/medium-to-own-blog

The documentation is still forthcoming, but the project page links to all the resources it uses.

PS: Ich habe nochmal ein wenig meine Startseite aufgem... show more

Apologia

For anyone that follows my mono log: Apologies for the long time since my last post. I got a severe cold a few weeks ago and that turned into bronchitis, which hung around for a couple of weeks. And now it’s the height of Spring and my allergies have kicked in.

Normal service will resume soon, I promise!

Nitrokey and Nextcloud collaborate on securing private clouds

Nitrokey develops fully open and auditable security USB keys for two-factor authentication, cryptographic key storage and much more. Their devices are developed and produced in Germany, primarily in Berlin. No overseas manufacturing is used to ensure quality and avoid hardware security breaches. The installed firmware can even be exported and verified, preventing attackers from inserting backdoors into products during shipping. Nitrokey has many other unique features, like hidden encrypted storage for plausible deniability at border checks. Learn about their offering on their website.

Self-hosting a Nextcloud gives users 100% control over their data, protecting their privacy. But privacy doesn’t exist without security and Nextcloud offers many security features like two-factor authentication (2FA), brute force protection, server and client side encryption and much more. Nitrokey’s security and encryption devices are a perfect match.
