It is time that people understand that # is in no way better compared to the other big tech companies. Like all of them, they have to comply with US law. Also their business depends more and more on adds and analyzing their users with AppleTV, AppleMusic, Siri, etc... Trusting black boxes and highly closed and regulated ecosystems will not bring us more # and freedom. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-apple-fbi-icloud-exclusive/exclusive-apple-dropped-plan-for-encrypting-backups-after-fbi-complained-sources-idUSKBN1ZK1CT #

This post may be caused by a large instance shutting down soon.

If you’re looking for a new home on the fediverse (or a place for a secondary account) feel free to apply on queerfem.space

We’re tiny right now but we are still actively moderating and making sure we don’t federate with fascists.

We don’t allow bigotry in any way and try to build a nice little corner of the fediverse here.

Admins speak English and German.

Coding is hard.

Errors are normal.

Explaining code is harder than creating code.

You don't have to be a genius to learn to code.

Now that you know, you don't have to quit.

You are smart enough.

Learning to code just takes time.

Be patient.

You'll get there.

Looks like spammers are now spamming the fediverse through federated blog comments.

Here's the view from #:

el_chava ⓜ reshared this.

@el_chava (mstdn) yeah, the problem is the Wordpress plugin for AP. The blog is Wordpress driven. And the plugin distributes the comments before they had been checked for spam content.

only partially true, I believe. Comments require approval, and the Akismet plugin was automatically skipping the approval process and marking it as spam, causing it to federate.

I can continue to investigate, we're trying to see whether migrating to the other AP plugin is a viable option.

on the other hand, the timestamps in those threads look a lot more recent... :(

no, sadly it's #, which is no longer in development. <img class=" title=":sad_lemon:">

I'm trying to figure out what the path forward is. Theoretically, we could fork the origin and move development to Feneas to give the project some kind of upstream, or we can try to find some way to migrate data to the other plugin.

I believe you should be able to switch plugin, the comments are just regular Wordpress comments, no need for migration.

the main concern is the followers, for ActivityPub purposes

Aaah, I see what you mean. In that case you probably need to get in touch with @Matthias Pfefferle to make this happen and close comments on We Distribute in the mean time.

Matteo Zignani, Christian Quadri, Alessia Galdeman, Sabrina Gaito andGian Paolo Rossi from the University of # scraped all english speaking instances (363) listed on instances.social, wrote a paper about it and are distributing the dataset.

While the abuse those on playvicious and myass have had thrown at them is awful and should never have happened, it's very good to see the affected people working together and comprehensively deconstructing the lies and racism, and even taking ownership of the abuse. To my eyes this is the best possible result of the drama around the abuse from witches.live because it shows that they have cohesive, strong communities. It's a sign of success.

If you haven't defederated from witches.live yet: why? Do it now. And maybe go follow some more people from playvicious and myasstodon. I promise you won't regret it. They have a lot to say and it's relevant to the dismantling of racism that so many white folks need to go through.

⚠️ The Fediverse has been scraped, again ⚠️

Almost six million posts from 363 instances have been scraped.

"All the posts with public visibility published by users hosted on Mastodon servers [...] which support the English language" have been scraped along with their metadata, and the "policy, the code of conduct and the prohibited contents of each instance".

Well, it's PV's plan to migrate away from Mastodon anyway, so it's whatever.

Ha, yes, I'll give you more details when they're ready to be shared.

Let's just say the fediverse needs more options than projects by ineffectual white folks that care more about numbers than stability and safety.

] A remark for readers from the US:
[ . . . ]
] Please consider the 12h time to be a relic from the dark ages when Roman numerals were used, the number zero had not yet been invented and analog clocks were the only known form of displaying a time.

NASA, you're alright.

If you use firefox, it allows for keyword bookmarks. Create a bookmark for, say,

https://man.openbsd.org/%s

and give it a keyword of "man" (might have to open the Bookmarks sidebar with control+B and edit it there for the full editor rather than the quick-edit interface). Then typing "man ed" in the URL bar will go to https://man.openbsd.org/ed or specify the section explicitly

man intro.8
vs
man intro.6

No need for add-ons.

Self-hosting is not an option for the general public. It's expensive, requires specific skills, and lots of time. Inevitably there will be someone in control of other people's shit.

It matters who those people are, and it is vital that we do what we can to make sure malicious fuckos aren't involved.
