Nearly one in 10 Americans surveyed say they deleted their Facebook account over privacy concerns

Here are the big takeaways:
  • 17% of respondents said they deleted the Facebook app from their phone over privacy concerns.
  • 35% said they were using Facebook less than they used to over the privacy issue.
  • 9% reported deleting their Facebook account altogether.
  • 39% said they were "very aware" of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, while 37% said they were "somewhat aware."

When 1 of 10 out of those 1 of 10 Americans users that said they deleted their Facebook account would have moved over the #diaspora, #friendica, #hubzilla or #mastodon, we would have got about 1 Mio new users, I guess.

Of course the number of users has increased since #deletefacebook, but not as much as it could have.
Either the users are still using other non-free alternatives like #whatsapp, #instagram etc, ignoring that some of those are still owned by Facebook, or maybe they weren't honest about deleting Facebook. The third option would be that those deleted Facebook and are not joining other social networks as an alternative.

We won't know for sure. But at least we got some new users, which is nice after all. :-)

I was wondering about that. But something is better than nothing!

And maybe the word will slowly spread ;-)

I think Xubuntu is one of the best-configured out-of-the-box desktop distros ever designed. In fact there are other Xfce distros that mimic Xubuntu's default configuration. There's even a Debian-based one, called #Xebian, that offers a Xubu-like experience! Check this out for fun.

I like Xubuntu because of its customisability: I can arrange things exactly how I want them.

I was using Ubuntu till they did Unity, and a bit after—but the interface became too fixed and unchangeable after a point. With XFCE I can rearrange the panel applets and everything, same as I used to do with GNOME. What's more it's also lighter. I've been using Xubuntu since Trusty (16.04), which for me, distro-hopper that I am, is saying something!

And yes, the out-of-the-box configuration is also great! I installed it for my grandfather to replace the slowing-down Windows XP, and he's been using it without any problems.

Is GitHub blocked in India?

I haven't been able to load github.com since yesterday; the connection keeps timing out. This usually happens to illegal sites (like The Pirate Bay) that have been blocked by the Indian government: sometimes it displays a "This website is blocked" message, but other times it just keeps trying to load till it times out.

When I try loading the website via Tor, it loads properly. And GitHub has been blocked in India before so this is not unprecedented.

Is anyone else from #India unable to load #GitHub? Do you think it's been blocked again?
#India #GitHub censorship github india

@(Maddl)
how democratic is india ?

A bit, I guess :P

if only you are afected, perhaps our object of spy or only your isp block sites ...

The Internet Archive is definitely a government-initiated block, now that it's showing the official block message. Both were giving the not-loading behaviour yesterday evening.

My guess is that they did that as a quick-fix censorship and later, then got their act together just now, displaying the official message for archive.org and (for whatever reason) unblocking github.com.

Of course, it might also be that GitHub was not loading for me for other reasons.

I have no prob loading archive.org too

@Sai Karthik: Now it's working for me too! Must have been unblocked.
